It seems French clubs remember how much Monaco almost fleeced us for Lemar and jack up the price.
We are being quoted over €10m for the €1m Alexis Claude-Maurice and now €30m for a €3m William Saliba.
Not scientific as i only used one source and it's not unusual practise but it was funny noticing the coincidence of both being quoted 10 times the published market value.

He's a good player but has been quoted at fees above €40 million, and he's just not worth that.

Armando Izzo is the cheap pick of the Serie A bunch of defenders in my opinion. He has easily been as good as the hype players this season. We were linked to him a few seasons ago. His off the pitch character makes him a less attractive target though - he was suspended for six months the other year for being involved in a match fixing scandal in Serie B back in 2014.

I doubt that it was ever a genuine intent to sign him, and the club/AW were pretty safe in making that offer on the last day of the transfer window. IMO it was all a PR stunt for the benefit of the fans as a sign of intent / ambition.

They spent £60m on Aubameyang 4 months later. Also did the big swap deal for Mkhitaryan. A huge investment on both players when you count wages too.

So the lack of intent seems a bizarre argument to make.

IIRC Lemar was the last summer transfer window AW still retained total control, whereas PEA was signed in the following transfer window when we then had Mislintat on board & changes were afoot. Even then the transfer activity was still less compared to the Lemar offer.

We were dousing flames on so many fronts i'm guessing the £32 extra was budgeted for Alexis' wage but when he made it clear he was leaving, Ozil fluked it.

That Lamar bid was Wenger just doing whatever he needed to keep the team in top 4. He was a destructive force by then. Between that and the Xhaka/Mustafi deals, he would’ve destroyed us. Mustafi is still the 9th most expensive central defender of all time. Chew on that

Imagine we signed Lemar for 90 mill. We wouldn't have able to sign Auba and we'd have been shit defensively and offensively. That would have destroyed us for the forseeable. I reckon we would have been in such a precarious position that even Emery wouldn't have been interested in taking over the job.

Question - does he have a legacy other than prior to the move? Is there anything about the football/technical operation that is worth retaining on or off the pitch by the time the end came?

OUTPUT OPERATION ? Ousmane Dembele, his physical weakness and attitude place him in the market. If a good offer arrives, the club will evaluate your departure. Malcom If Valverde comes out, Coutinho can continue to have more prominence. The Premier can be your destination #mercato

the barca move was so wrong for him. arsenal would be a good landing place, if we could afford him. his big brothers auba and laca can look after him

His attitude seems to be an issue, but it's a risk well worth taking for me if there was any chance we could get him. Football wise he ticks all the boxes.

Dembele is the sort of player it would truly be worth gambling a mega transfer fee on. Pay Barca with shares in the club if necessary.

Oh. So there is a rumor. I bet Liverpool take him.
If they don’t, then we should sell a bunch of players to get him. Two footed forward who can score and create. Would be our main threat for years to come.

Certainly are elements - the expressive attacking play and the integrity of how things are conducted
