They wouldn't do it against Spain because they mostly attack through the middle, but I can see them doing it against a big team that relies a lot on wing play going forward. I remember Croatia playing a similar CM partnership against Brazil (who rely a lot on wing play to create chances) and they didn't look poor defensively.
Anyway, my point is, if you think your midfielder is poor defensively, you don't become more more solid against most teams by taking him out of the centre and playing him out wide IMO.
And by the way, it doesn't matter whether Costa Rica had a midfielder playing in the Swedish league, fact is, they have been one of the best teams in the tournament.
