I agree. I think I read an interview with him once where he said he'd read Byzantine history, and he's obviously read about Sforza and the Borgias and so on as well. Basically anything involving bloody successions and backstabbing.

A lot of fantasy writers these days seem to be wannabe historical fiction writers who understandably can't be bothered with forensic research. It's a genre I quite like.

Was it John Julius Norwich's Byzantine history you were reading by the way? I read that a few years ago and it was brilliant, really enjoyable popular account.

Nah, it was a book by Judith Herrin.

I like the genre too. Had vague notions of doing some research and trying my hand at it but as always, apathy and laziness got in the way.

Just watched the whole s1 over the weeked. Sean Bean is epic. Definitly worth watching although it took a while to pick up speed... Looking forward to the 2nd season, hopefully they will stick to the same formula Great story, gore & tits.

It's almost become the standard text book.

@[deleted] I can believe it. I don't normally read popular history but I found it really engrossing. Really must read Norwich's book about the Norman pirate kingdom in Sicily one of these days.

@Pep Are you a fan of Joe Abercrombie? Along similar lines, a bit more humour involved. Enjoyable.

Saw the Sherlock season ender last night. I think it's good television.

The makers of the Downey/Law films must rue its existence. They can't make their films as good as a BBC TV programme.

so many people iI know dropped the wire because they felt the first 5 eps were like treacle.

You really are in for a treat, especially if you've got straight into it. Even myself, like Gazza mentioned, found it slow to begin with. Still meaning to re-watch it all.

Finished Season 1 of Breaking Bad last night. Final two episodes were brilliant. Can't wait to start S2.

The Wire and Breaking Bad are two of the greatest shows ever made! Watched all seasons of The Wire twice. Very intense series.

Is it? I don't know how I'm gonna cope with watching Walton Goggins in two shows at once, he's bloody brilliant.

The first couple of episodes I found a little slow, but nothing that would have stopped me watching even if I hadn't heard all the good things about it. You could see it was well made from the get-go. It really is gripping stuff now though. Breaking Bad was another that really got more intense as the series moved along - series two has been ordered!

And I couldn't agree more, Burn. The Sherlock films are decent, but the series is in another League. So, anyway, how do those that have seen the series finale think Sherlock managed to pull off the ending? (I watched the last 10 minutes again and could see roughly what happened, save for a few details that I can't quite work out).

Watched the first Sherlock episode yesterday. I took a liking to Watson but found the Sherlock character to be incredibly irritating, and his level of analysis a little over the top. I might try a second episode.

That Sherlock grew on me.
Though it was a brilliant performance - many facets of his character revealed as the series progresses.

Great series IMO. Bit disappointed in the end what they did to the Moriarty character. His actions at the end there don´t really make any sense.

In the context of him being a cold calculating psychotic master criminal they don't, in the context of him being a brilliant but sociopathic genius who was completely bananas they do, sort of 🙂
Also, didn't he have to do it in order to ensure Sherlock completed the final act as he had planned it?

It makes no sense to me that would go through all that trouble only to have it end that way. Getting Sherlock to that stage can´t have been his ONLY motivation in life!

He was bored! Can't say fairer than that. 😉

I agree, in the books Sherlock throws Moriarty off a the edge of a cliff which is a more realistic line. On the other hand, the way his death was carried out in the tv series puts Holmes in a difficult spot which is more fun to watch him get out of.

The biggest issue I have is that Mycroft Holmes is an idiot when he's suppose to be the most intelligent character of them all.
