Genuinely confused that anyone's defending Mertesacker on the first goal. He was no where near winning the ball, and if he stays on his feet he has 3-4 yards on Neymar to track the run

That would be the sensible thing to do but I think Wenger is going to play our strongest team.

If Ox is injured for a decent time then that should be his last season here, honestly. Send him on loan next year. If he does well, great, we can think about him, else time to say goodbye.

I think we contained them well. It had nothing to do with Barca's gears in my opinion.

I said at half time that we won't be able to deal with sustained pressure but we gifted them the first. When you concede a goal to Messi assisted by Neymar when both center backs are not in the picture then it's abysmal.

Ramsey and Coquelin both had fantastic first halves but got overrun in the second half.
Alexis tried hard but his defender knew he would go right every time.
Ozil marked Busquets out of the game.
Giroud plodded and the other players (Barca's included) were miscellaneous though Messi somehow got 2 goals.
Ox run somewhere till Theo came on and looked around.

They have looked leggy recently. And their modus operandi at this stage is to draw away or lose by 1 goal and then do the business at home. They rarely really go for it in the away leg.

Another 90minutes where we can't score against 11 men.

Our lack of goals is a proper issue and will continue on when we have garbage from finishing from ground, oxlade, theo, Sanchez and Ramsey.

So they don't go all out (i.e. into 5th gear) because they could concede and end up losing?

It wasn't our best performance either, I don't really get what point you're trying to make, but I really don't like the assertion that this could have been 6-1 if they wanted it to be. Why would they bother holding back away from home if they can just smash everyone (or us).

And I have no idea what you're arguing any more. My opening post was not in response to you and the term 'second gear' was merely illustrative of the fact that they weren't over committing but controlled the game for the most part.

To be fair, it did look to me that they were not exactly in top gear. They passed the ball around a lot, we chased it.. We even created a few chances that we couldn't score. then, like Iceman in Top Gun, then wait for us to make our mistake and then BAM, done.

I dont think we played horribly, but im still disappointed that we cant seem to score.

Wenger called the team technically average in the post match. Did it really take a game against barcelona to make that apparent to him?

As for barca playing in a lower gear, they probably did because fatigue has been setting in for them lately. In the 5-10 minutes before they scored you could see some tired mistakes creeping in. Their supporters feared our freshness and running but we ultimately didn't make it count

They passed it around because we weren't porous, we set up well and didn't leave any gaps especially between the lines. We were genuinely good defensively in the first half. For the first time since November 2016 did Barcelona not register a single shot on target in the first half of a competitive game. I bet it wasn't just because they were taking it easy.

Ox takes his chance and this is a very different game.
