There are no long term replacements in modern football. Average lifespan of coaches/managers feels like 3-4 years at most - doubt we will be any different. I do think we need someone to manage the transition in the club and get rid of the detritus of the Wenger years, much like Wenger managed to come 4th by putting sticking plaster on a DDS midfield and Chamakh/Gervinho/Bendtner forward line.

We DO NOT need a transition manager. Can someone defines whatever the hell a transition is? We BEEN transitioning since we moved to Emirates. I need someone who can make us a competitor immediately. That means a coach who

has a clear framework for how he plays his football, and communicate that verbally or non-verbally to the players and fans
spends the next 3 transfer windows building out a real team, and discarding Walcott et al
can quickly shake the malaise that has set in
can quickly help Egghead in building out a sporting structure, and have faith in it

I don't want a transition guy. Fuck transition!

Claud - in my mind, a transition manager is one whose primary role should be #4 above, while still being able to get performances on the pitch. That is the most important step towards making Arsenal a sustainably competitive club. Once those dynamics and roles are set, we can then hire whatever manager is best, but someone needs to help the club understand how to make a proper sporting structure work. To my mind, that person needs to have experience working in England as well as elsewhere with such a structure so that he understands the roles of the various players in that structure.

I'm thinking along the same lines. Just look at our squad. Players who will not be here in two years include:

Cech
Ospina
Giroud
Koscielny
Monreal
Cazorla
Mertesacker
Gabriel
Jenkinson
Debuchy
Welbeck
Sanogo
Lucas

Kos is the only real question mark among those guys, but you have to think he'll be spent at the age of 34 in Premier League. He'll be in PSG or Monaco at that point.

In addition to those we'll probably lose Sanchez, Özil and Chamberlain too. The point is that we have no team to 'steady'. Our squad is old and poor. We need new blood badly.

As Klaus points out above Chelsea were not potentially replacing a whole team. I was worried about Chelsea the moment they hired Conte.

The idea that we need to replace a whole team is far fetched. We need some stars but these players were doing fine a few months ago. There is still quality there. Whats lacking is leadership. We'll need to replace Sanchez and Ozil though.

It's their ages too. It was a concern last season and it's an even bigger concern now. Two thirds of the starting eleven will be gone in two years. And it won't be the best players we're left with.
