Saw something on a NUFC blog that suggested that Rafa had become the preferred option already in domestic football ahead of the likes of Howe or Koemans, and that TH was the suggestion as Assistant.

Not as exciting as some of the names in Europe, but I would take that over another season of Wenger. Benitez is a real scholar of the game.

I'm not sure the board would go for Rafa. They seem committed to "entertainment" and he's one of the most boring coaches around.

I don't think the board give the slightest shit about whether we are entertaining or not (and we haven't been consistently entertaining for many years but that's another story) as long as they keep securing top 4 and CL last 16.

If a new manager came in and did exactly that, got top for and last 16 for the next 3 years and showing no signs that he's capable to taking us any further, does he automatically get a new deal? I don't think so personally.

At the same time if he does the same but plays "entertaining" football (instead of Rafa football) during that time without showing any signs that he's able to take us any further, does he get an automatic deal? I don't think it's that much more likely.

Wenger is in a special position because he is so ingrained into the club. Plus they guy has won us a lot of trophies over the years, albeit mostly frontloaded. Then there is the rumors that he was involved in the recruiting of our CEO. There will be a lot more leniency towards him than any other manager at Arsenal because of what he's achieved during his early years and the work he's done during the stadium years and transforming the club back in the late 90s. You can't compare Wenger's standing with the current Management to any manager that comes after him precisely because of this.

Wenger leaving may make the board more rutheless with the manager and demand more, I don't know but I don't think their judgement will be really influenced over style issues over what kind of footballing philosophy the team has. I doubt Kroenke even knows much about the aesthetics of football. It's an investment for him, plain and simple. The question is, how safe does he want to play it with his money because he probably currently feels very comfortable with Wenger in charge knowing the returns he'll make if we keep getting top 4 and CL last 16. Maybe he wants to take risks and win things to improve our global brand recognition which will result in even more in his pockets eventually (doubt it but you never know).

One thing is for sure, when Wenger finally leaves, Kroenke will have lost that safety net won't have that same sense of comfort in thinking we'll get top 4 and CL last 16. I guess once that happens we'll see what the real reasons we were being held back all these years.

Your second paragraph was exactly what I was driving at. I think people make a lot of assumptions about how the board think based on their devotion and faith in Wenger, whether it's their philosophy on how football should be played or the limit of their ambitions. While some of those assumptions might be correct, I think a lot of them will turn out to be wrong. Time will tell.

I think they see "entertaining" football as Arsenals brand. They will have options and it wont be the case that one guarantees success and another does not. They'll want to be competitive while still seen generally as playing attractive football.

AW said as much back around 2009, that our image & marketing with the move was to appeal to the entertainment dollar so as to be seen as an alternative to going to see a show etc.
