We can utilise Ozil in a diamond midfield just as well as a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1. Ozil's position is not where the problem lies.
The problem lies in having CMs being asked to play a holding or DLP role that's not their game. It applies to Ramsey, Wilsh or even Cazorla. Even if we signed better players to fit our 4-2-3-1, we're still looking at these guys seemingly without a position.
We also have a load of non-9 forwards- Theo, Ox, Alexis, Welbeck, Campbell. This is why I've always thought our best formation is 4-4-2 diamond. We've got a deputy for Coquelin now, and multiple players for every position except no 9, which the diamond formation doesn't necessarily need a perfect fit for.
