I agree with the rest of you about Star Trek - seems to be drifting already. The main problem as identified by Mrs Asterix is that there is no character to really care about.

I'm a bit slow to Stranger Things - only 2 episodes into Season 1 but enjoying it so far. Nice to hear Hazy Shade of Winter again. That show is almost bang on my generation, except I was a bit older than the kids.

I've heard it goes off the rails towards the end of the season, but not too worried. The enjoyment of this particular show is mainly about the texture of the sets, the creature designs and the overall sensibility for me.

There’s a couple of dodgy episodes in there but like you I just enjoy the whole vibe of the show. Reminds me of The Goonies.

The first season was such a surprise that it was always going to be a bit of a drop off for the second season. I've stalled half way through because I know the next episode is the one everyones complaining about.

It does drop off towards the end of S2. The Deus Ex Machina resolution isn't great. Overall though twas a good watch.

The fucking stupid episode numbering made me watch episode 3.1 before 3.0, thinking the latter is a trailer or some shit like that. Despite that I agree, it's been excellent.

The balance is a lot better this season, the show is much more structured and you're starting to give a damn about the characters. Too much weirdness last season. The Prison twist was an utter farce.

amazon has inked a deal for a LOTR tv series. have to admit i'm really keen to see a non-PJ helmed interpretation of that world

This could be absolutely amazing or an absolute disaster. They have the blessing of the Tolkien Estate so I'm optimistic.

Amazon bosses have been looking for their own Game of Thrones for a while now. No one was really sure whether they meant a big genre hit or an actual sword and sorcery show, guess we know now. I predict it will be shit.

Exactly. Amazon's business model is basically a war of attrition, fucking up is almost a goal in itself if it means killing the competition. Still, 200m for the rights alone is absolutely insane

Should be great in theory. It's not exactly difficult story telling. Just get the casting right and make sure it doesn't go off the rails.

That being said I hope it has a darker, more fearful tone to it.

The plot's so well known they'll have to make it more entertaining, you'd think.

I wouldn't mind if they took a lot of liberties with Tolkien.

Apparently it's going to be a prequel and will borrow from Tolkien material that Jackson didn't have access to when making the films. Sounds like they want more of a blank canvas.

Turns out they're also making TV versions of His Dark Materials, The Wheel of Time and Witcher.

Surely at least one of them will turn out to be good.
