Was thinking more of the Marvel superhero TV shows, to be honest. Luke Cage is average, Iron Fist looks genuinely bad and I feel The Defenders is going to struggle. Some sf with a bit of edge will be far more appealing.

There's definitely a bit of an sf resurgence going on.

Agree with all the comments about sf TV tending to abuse its audience with lazy writing as it goes on though.

When facing competition such as Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, I think the Marvel TV shows will do just fine. The Punisher show will probably be a big hit.

I think Burnsy's right though, the sci-fi resurgence has been going on for a while now. Westworld is a symptom rather than a cause in my opinion.

After Battlestar Galactica ended you were hard pressed to find a single sci-fi show. Now you've got Westworld on HBO, who are also launching a big-budget adaptation of Altered Carbon next year. The rebranded SyFy channel is running The Expanse, The Killjoys and the excellent bagatelle Dark Matter, and Star Trek is getting a new show which has just been delayed for another 6 months because CBS keep increasing the budget and thus the scope. You've had big Hollywood films like Interstellar and The Martian in the last 2-3 years too. Last time this happened was probably during the TNG era.

The SyFy channel is a a sci-fi channel though and it hasn't had a big hit since BSG. The last big sci-fi hit on TV was Lost, that launched a thousand sci-fi shows in the few years after it and they all failed. In movies there is always a drip drop of sci-fi movies. They are much bigger risks than super hero movies though. For every success there are many more failures. And I think its notable that Interstellar and the Martian were not summer tentpole movies. To say a resurgent sci-fi can topple the superhero dominance is a bit of a stretch.

There is only one sci-fi franchise that can compete the superheroes and thats Star Wars, which is pretty light on the sci.

To who? Great TV will always find an audience but mediocre super hero shit finds an audience where I don't think mediocre sci fi will.

There are a few new sci-fi shows on the US networks coming in a few weeks so it'll be interesting to see if they can find an audience or if they are cancelled before Christmas.

I agree Dark Matter is pretty decent.

Its about the idea that they can topple or even compete with superheros now. There is plenty of sci-fi if you are into it but on TV it hasn't really been getting much of an audience. Without that it's gonna have a hard time becoming resurgent.

Ironically an awful lot of the superhero stuff is quite sci-fi-y. Flash is pretty much entirely about time travel and the idea of a multiverse.

Legends of Tomorrow is also pretty much Sci-Fi. It's also awful and a horrid waste of a Caity Lotz.

Nor is she expected to be is she? But if a show actively makes you not wanna watch it despite having a delicious babe in the maincast, it's wasting said delicious babe.

Oh I'm not defending the show. I haven't really watched it. She just strikes me as a pretty mediocre actress from the bits I've seen of her in other stuff.

Based on Arrow she's a bad actress in my opinion. Haven't seen much of Legends, stopped after three or four episodes.

Finished Luke Cage. Think it's the weakest of the Marvel Netflix shows, but I enjoyed it. Looking forward to The Defenders with Sigourney Weaver as the villain.

First season of Les Revenants (French original) was really, really good. Not conventional television. Haven't watched the second series yet but I mean to. Probably wouldn't bother with the US remake myself but it's probably ok.
