anyone check out the westworld pilot? im intrigued to see where they take it. there's a possibility things could turn out a bit cliched with the 'artificial intelligence becomes sentient' angle. hopefully there's a few twists in store

luke cage was a mixed bag. there was a good show somewhere in there, but it all got a bit muddied by some weird plotting, and distracting casting choices (specifically that dude that played juice on SOA. can't buy him as a serious villain after he played such a bitch on that show). the african-american street culture/blaxploitation references and themes felt a bit forced and inauthentic as well. was hoping for a bit more

i did. it's 13 episodes of full on corny dialogue. weird pace too.

they deliberately went with corny dialogue/action sequences as an homage to 70s blaxploitation movies, but it still just felt jarring and forced within the marvel trappings

Looking forward to that Gaz.

I've watched the first couple of eps of Luke Cage and found it frivolous but ok so far.

Reckon resurgent sf might slowly crush the superhero genre in the next couple of years, the premises and plots are so much more satisfying and engaging than the ensemble cast grimdark superhero rubbish.

You think theres actually a sci-fi resurgence though? I don't see it. Westworld might be a success but its not like GOT launched a load of successful sword and sorcery shows/movies to crush the superhero stuff.

Marvel is going to keep on dominating. Their Netflix shows are mostly good, their films are cleaning up and are usually pretty good. The rest I'm not so sure about. Apart from Deadpool there hasn't been a good non-marvel superhero film in years. The DC films are garbage and X-Men has gone to shit too.

It'll be interesting to see if they keep on dominating after phase 3. It's everything they've been building up to, and they'll have to start over. Probably without Downey and Evans too.

They don't need them though. They can get pretty much anyone they want at this point.

The issue isn't really superhero films to me though. We get a few a year but we get plenty of other action blockbusters every summer too and they tend not to work much. Just look at this summer. All the other big action films flopped hard, so much so that Suicide Squad that was a bit of flop itself had a bigger gross.

If superhero movies are going to take a backseat then something has to replace them and I don't really see the same sort of appetite for sci-fi at the moment.

I don't trust sci-fi shows. Lost count how many times we've seen shows with an interesting premise meander around the main plot with frivolous story lines.

I think Burnsy's right though, the sci-fi resurgence has been going on for a while now. Westworld is a symptom rather than a cause in my opinion.

After Battlestar Galactica ended you were hard pressed to find a single sci-fi show. Now you've got Westworld on HBO, who are also launching a big-budget adaptation of Altered Carbon next year. The rebranded SyFy channel is running The Expanse, The Killjoys and the excellent bagatelle Dark Matter, and Star Trek is getting a new show which has just been delayed for another 6 months because CBS keep increasing the budget and thus the scope. You've had big Hollywood films like Interstellar and The Martian in the last 2-3 years too. Last time this happened was probably during the TNG era.
