Just finished The Expanse. It's basically True Detective Season 2 in space. There's too much going on, plot is too dense and diffcult to grasp, and the way it's adapted to the screen leaves a lot to be desired.

On the upside it looks absolutely gorgeous, there are a ton of terrific actors, and the world-building is pretty impressive. I just wish they would have used all this setting to tell a different tale in a different way. The show deserves a more interesting story. I'm definitely sticking around for season 2, but I'm gonna pin my hopes for a high-quality hard scifi show on Altered Carbon and the new Star Trek instead.

I really like The Expanse, but I agree its plotting has left a lot to be desired so far.

Just really enjoy the setting, the characters (with the partial exception of Thomas Jane's gumshoe, who doesn't really convince me but isn't too bad), and the action. I feel like it's an extrapolation of some of the setting premises of Total Recall, the Belter city is very similar to Total Recall's Mars colony.

Altered Carbon looks good, I'm also looking forward to seeing how the KSR adaptation pans out, though they could really stuff that up.

I only watched it a couple of episodes. It had a lot of promise but ultimately too much of it annoyed me. Especially that cartoon detective with the hat.

Is Friday Night Lights really worth watching? I had it on my list but ever since finding out that it's directed by the guy who directed Battleship, possibly the most poorly directed film I've ever seen, I've shelved it indefinitely.

Some people whose opinion I respect love the show but I don't really care for it. There are some neatly written plots and fleshed out characters, but also a lot of predictable soapy bullshit that takes me out of it. It's a lot like Lost in that regard. A show that had the potential to be great but could never quite shake it's trash tv roots. I do think it's a show where you watch one or two episodes and you'll have an idea whether you like it or not.

The show is more by Jason Katims than Peter Berg. Berg did a great job on the FNL movie though. Anyway I think it's a brilliant show, one of the best of the last decade or so. Admittedly there is one appalling story line in season 2 but apart from that it's mostly top notch. Just Google the show and look at the metacratic and RT scores for the last 3 seasons. Ever wonder why people keep letting Taylor Kitch be terrible in stuff? Its because they think he might get back to his FNL level at some point.

Jens is right though. You'll know pretty quick if you'll like it. I'd say if you like the pilot you'll like the run of the show.

It's the best of those "everyday" drama series. I'd recommend it strongly.

I watched FNL based on Qs' recommendation, and I liked it a lot.

If anyone saw The Night Manager recently, Elizabeth Debicki is starring in a new drama called The Kettering Incident on Australian pay TV. It's set in a remote logging town in Tasmania and has been described as an Aussie Twin Peaks, but seems a bit grittier than that. It's only 3 episodes in so far out of 8. Debicki is fantastic, and the landscape is wonderful - remote, beautiful, threatening.

Game of Thrones just received 23 Emmy nominations for one of the most boring and uneventful tv seasons this decade. Kit Harington apparently scored a nomination for best supporting actor. I agree that it was nice to see him breathing through his nose instead of his mouth when he was on screen this year, but... come on.

Pleased to see People vs OJ Simpson got a load of nominations. Surprised at Cuba Gooding Jr getting nominated for lead actor though. Despite being the title character he was far from the main character.

Glad to see The Americans finally get nominated. Biggest miss is Buscemi for Horace and Pete.
