Something like that perhaps. #1 is clear cut in my mind but from there on out it gets shoddy. Augustus Hill, Larry David, Carmela Soprano, Bunk Moreland, Nelson van Alden and Rust Cohle all great characters that missed out.

Lack of comedies there. I don't think McNulty was anything close to a great character, in fact none of the cops were all that compelling on the Wire. Agree that the best character on the Wire was Stringer Bell, he had a few layers. I'd forgot about Oz, trying to decide who was the best character on that, maybe Beecher?

Completely agree on Tony Soprano, still probably the best TV character of all time for me. And you could probably just do 10 Sopranos characters for this list.

Especially in seasons 1-3, McNulty rang so true as a depressed, divorced guy who took his pleasures wherever he could find them, usually running his own little scheme at work. There was something so human about him, like the scene where he comes home all pissed up and tries to put together the IKEA beds for his kids was so sore and real. He also had great comedic timing and played an excellent drunk.

I agree on McNulty, don't think he was particularly interesting at all.

I thought MCNulty started as a pretty much just an archetypical TV cop. Then he descended into boredom as he settled down and then to utter silliness in the last season where his storyline completely ruined the shows end.

I love Paulie Walnuts to death but he was hardly the most layered character on the show, and during the first half of it's run served mainly as comic relief. I will say ever since he began doubting Tony's affection for him and began diming him out to Johnny Sack he was an excellent character on his own right.

Maybe, but he was still a terrific character. Pine Barrens is one of my favourite episodes of any TV show.

I agree McNulty's season 5 storyline was the main reason that season faltered. That should never have been green lighted.

Pine Barrens has the most quotable lines of any episode in television history and that's a hill I'm willing to die on. Adore that episode, their delivery is so amazing. When he pulls out his gun in frustration and starts unloading on his makeshift cloth shoe I piss myself laughing.

I didn't consider Johnny Sack for the list, he was also a terrific character.

Shame really as I liked parts of the general storyline of the fifth season. That one asshole reporter of the Baltimore Sun especially, in a show where you got mass murderers, psychopaths and corrupt politicians you have to be a brilliant actor/writer to pull off a simple journalist being the biggest dickhead of them all

Tyrion's a fine character but I've found some of his lines and his delivery makes it sound like he's on stage performing in a play. That's put me off him a bit, although he is probably responsible for the most memorable scenes on the show.

The list was for HBO characters. If it was for all television, both those characters would definitely have made mine.

If you're gonna do all comedy you absolutely have to incude David Brent.

Also Cartman and Randy Marsh.

michael c hall's character from six feet under has to be considered.

i havent seen game of thrones, and i havent watched deadwood since it originally aired, so my list would have big omissions. need to think a bit more about it

Just watched S5 finale of The Shield. I feel raw. That had possibly the most fucking emotional tv scene I've ever watched. Even though I knew it was coming.
