Big Willie The show bible for S1 reveals why it was so compelling. Good world building, aesthetically driven, excellent use of technology as a narrative device, and a simple plot with a sort of magnetic quality that pulled characters inevitably toward the finale in a satisfying but not overly explanatory way.
Then it blew up and they decided to try and flesh everything out, but it's all fluff - there was never anything more there. There didn't need to be, should of just let it lie. The actors weren't good enough to carry their expanded roles, either. David Harbour, in particular, is way too limited and couldn't handle emotionally carrying a scene.
