First three episodes of HoD have been pretty 'meh' to me. The plot and characters are not really drawing me in at all so far. I'm also not sure if it's just my eyes, but the special effects/CGI and staging/props look noticeably 'fake' to me, particularly in the shots of cities etc.

HoT D also looks considerably more drab after watching rings of power. I'm hoping they start delving into the character and relationships among the the dragons. the human drama has been ok, but it's standard fare in light of what we've already seen in GOT

The fire coming out of the dragon's mouth in ep 1 was on par with Dr Who - the Tom Baker versions. It got better but not a lot.

Rings is better but so far only feels like a 7/10 or so - I have been hoping for a 8.5 or 9. The Dwarven city of Khazad Dum reminded me of Skyrim, which I guess is to be expected.

Started watching Bad Sisters but it goes for 10 episodes and I can't be bothered. It would be better over 3 or 4.

I enjoyed Mystery Road: Origin on Aussie ABC recently. The actual mystery was a bit weak, but the evocation of the town and the characters sucked me in.

I also watched Mystery Road: Origins while I was sick with covid a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Good story, strong main caharacters/actors and beautifully shot.
What streaming service is the new LoTR thingo on in Oz Asterix?

It was the opposite for me. I found rings pretty dull after watching hotd, which is a slow burn but has a lot of characters who I find interesting to watch.

Found myself loling several times at the general silliness of rings, eg the elves all standing in rigid formation on their ship on an incredibly long journey.

Though hotd episode 3 got pretty silly too and was rather reminiscent of the vacuous spectacle that the later seasons of GoT championed

Was about to say the same thing. Only watched the first episode, but found it looking kind of wonky. Will definitely keep going though.

@[deleted] Too bad what you're saying about Bad Sisters, was really looking forward to watching it.

Anyone else think the 1 episode a week format is massively outdated? Especially for two shows like this that are not exactly fast moving and action packed. If they don't want to release it in one go surely they can at least release two episodes a week?

I do enjoy binging, but can understand that the one episode a week format provides much more hype/discussion, especially for big shows that basically become a part of the lunch conversations etc. I felt like everyone were done talking about Stranger Things by the time I watched it a couple of weeks later. 😆

Highly recommend The Offer on Paramount. About the making of the Godfather set in the 70s. It’s incredible, Mad Men meets Goodfellas. Miles Teller is really good in it and the actors that play Pacino and Brando are really good too.

One of the best shows in last 5 years imo.

I get that, that's why I said they could at least release it twice a week. Alternatively if you're only showing 1 episode a week make them movie length.

I tried to let HoD build up but there's so many spoilers about that I had to watch it.

It’s on Amazon Prime Daz. There’s a website called comparetv that will let you know what services which shows are on.

Re Bad Sisters - I think plenty will enjoy it - there is some good dark humour - but me and the missus felt 10 episodes was just too much.

There's a few things happening here
1) streaming services are month-to-month subs with a high risk of churn. you can prevent churn by stretching out episode drops for tentpoles

2) you get more buzz - so chat on twitter, supporting podcasts etc can build the audience, engagement and re-watches.

So rather than have Claudius come and binge it all one weekend, have him watch one episode per week, after which he will invariably look at recommendations for some other junk to watch

I think the battle was meant to be like one of those Greek myths. So that coming out of this, Daemon's legend grows across the empire at the expense of his brother.

Not saying that you're doing it right now, but I often see this kind of comment to dismiss criticism of things that don't make sense in fantasy/MCU/SW etc. In my opinion, a show having dragons, monsters or whatever isn't an excuse for things not making sense within a universe where dragons exist. It's suspension of disbelief, and dragons existing in a world has no bearing on the particular part Pepe and Qwiss were talking about.

Any show needs to have its own internal logic or else its just drivel.

The show doesn't really operate like a Greek Myth so that reading doesn't work for me. And that scene was more like an 80's action film than any Greek myth anyway.

The execution of the battle was pretty clichéd, with the usual archery salvo nonsense, and the mute crablord summoning bands of troops with head flicks like a night king knock off, but it was the context provided by Corlys that bothered me more, it made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

'The crablord retreats into a cave whenever the dragons come, so it's only a matter of time until we lose'... Sorry, what?!

GOT started out with quite a gritty and realistic tone where the threat of death felt tangible anytime a character was in peril . the plot armour driven battles of the later seasons like the white walker invasion of winterfell was quite jarring and made it feel like the stakes were lowered. HOD exists in a more mythic period so I can accept a more heightened tone. they've set the expectations pretty early on

Get a firestick, pay 16Eur for a subscription of Real-debrid and watch every show and film you could ever possibly want to watch in 4k/1080p at no extra cost.

You can even get the Netflix functionality of a show auto playing the next episode during the end credits. I've cancelled every subscription I have since and not looked back.
