I’m just pointing out their complicated life. I live in South Africa where different broadcasters have various Disney, Marvel, and ABC rights. Those would first need to be unwound for Disney+ to really have a go here. Netflix doesn’t need to think about that. They just launch with whatever they have license to show and their originals.

12 months in the US. In some countries it didn't even release until September. Their goal at launch was originally 60-90m within 2024, so they definitely aren't struggling. Their rights issues are going away gradually, but new content will be the main draw in the meantime.

I think they're better off piling on the originals, I reckon that's what's worked for Netflix more than anything.

Yeah. It's going to have to be lots of new content. One movie every 2 months won't cut it. Netflix releases new content on average daily. That's enough for most people to find something useful each month.
Disney will need to invest. There's only so many Captain America re-watches you can do before you decide to take 2 or 3 months until the next big release. That's what I did with Amazon. I binged some shows, decided there's no need for Fleabag and Maisel and was out.

That's exactly what they're doing to be fair. They announced like 10 new Marvel series and the same for Star Wars. But that's just two franchises, which is why it's important to implement The Fox stuff. All former, current and upcoming Fox/FX content are now technically "Disney originals". Family Guy, Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, What We Do in the Shadows, American Horror Story, Fargo, Always Sunny etc. are still running which means new content pretty regularly.

If Disney, Amazon, HBO and Netflix are left as the survivors of the streaming war I think it's a good mix of enough competition to avoid a monopoly while not having so many that it's hard to watch the stuff you want to.

That feels about right. Although, CBS / Paramount has good sports relationships in America, so they'll be hard to beat in the near term.
Depending on how this plays out, whoever is able to play an integrator role could be the power player. Essentially mediate in the same way the cable companies did. Even with only 4 or 5 streamers, people still have difficulty understanding where/when everything is, and being able to go on one platform from AT&T/Google/Apple/Amazon, etc will help. This integrator needs to be someone who is good at media relationships and search, and can be trusted. So it will take a while.

Apparently they're sidestepping their original promise of only having children-friendly stuff by having these things in their own hub inside Disney+. So the hubs are Disney, Star Wars, Marvel, National Geographic, Pixar and Star (where the Fox content will be).

Basically the HBO+ formula. Way to go. I like what they're planning on doing with Star Wars. Infinite possibilities there.

Feels like it's coming down to flagship properties, and Disney were always going to be a behemoth because of the intellectual property they control. It's a strategy they've been working with for decades.

We binged The Undoing yesterday - Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. Really enjoyable binge fare - 6 episodes and we kept changing our minds on who we thought was the guilty party until right near the end, so that's fun.

The new season of The Expanse premiered today for those who're interested. Unlike last year they didn't release the whole season at once though. Seems like three episodes are out and then one weekly from now on. I have an ever-growing backlog of shows to watch so I think I'll wait until I can watch everything.

[spoiler]why do they always insist on going there? And it looked awful as well, just use a different fucking actor if you’re going to do it. As you can tell, I don’t like Luke Skywalker and wish they would just let his character die.

That being said, I love the Mandaloroan in general, looking forward to season 3. Though dissapointed that he’s been split up from the kid 🙁[/spoiler]

[spoiler]throwing him into mandalorian is unashamed gratuitous fan service. felt like an apology for the portrayal of Luke in last jedi, which was divisive to say the least. im happy if that's the send off they give him, and they move on from him. you're right that the uncanny valley-ness of it was jarring[/spoiler]
