the ending was weak sauce, and they were making it up as they went along, but the journey is still worth it. they pulled some of the best twists on tv out of their ass throughout that run, and the acting was great at times

Got to say, I have not been a devotee of CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM but my partner got me into the last season, and I thought it was brilliant.

Written like a long standup comedy set with all the early season set-ups coming home to roost, one by one. Very funny stuff, and I'm not into some of the other recommendations …

It’s a bit like supporting Arsenal if you started supporting us during the early Wenger era. The early seasons hooks you in to such an extent that dispute being miserable and angry with the stuff produced by the writers later on, you still tune in every week.

The initial concept behind Lost was great, the characters, the actors, the intrigue, still haven’t seen a show like it since. A lot of the Lost backlash is massively overblown too. Yeah it doesn't hold up as much in the latter seasons but it still has some great episodes and its definitely worth watching all the way through. A lot of the negative reaction came from the hype around it at the time. Its probably the last big networks show that had that sort of buzz for so long. I even think GOT doesn't quite match up to the hype. I used to spend the week between the episodes reading theories and examining everything in minute detail.

The biggest problem Lost had was that it was a mystery and the internet existed. People had a million theories and Lindelof denied them all, of course some were true. He should just never have answered.

The big problem I had with it was that they insisted it would all have a realistic, logical explanation. It didn't, and it was clear they simply didn't have an answer to all the questions raised. You mention the internet theories, but they definitely played to that, the mystery increased exponentially, and then couldn't back it up with answers or at least good answers.

But I'd have to re-watch it without the expectation to see how it holds up.

I watched it in a binge several years after it came out with little background. First season was great. Sucked me in. And the rest was okay, with some annoyances. But then one thing happened with a wheel where I just quit. I think I had been slowly losing faith in it and then it went overboard in that moment. Usually when I quit shows they’re just drab, very seldom do I remember a specific moment

Oh they definitely played to the internet slueths. They had websites for the companies in the show and those sites had clues in the code, etc When I say they answered too many questions that was part of it too. I think they though they were too clever and too popular for the backlash. Show runners are far more guarded now because they seen what happened to Lindelof and a few others since. I think they knew the ending pretty well from the start though.

Nah man, Lost started out great but the show ended up, and sorry for the pun, getting lost on the way. Seemed like they had no clue how to take things and for me the last straw was when they turned it into a good vs evil battle between Jacob and his brother. Also who the fuck was that Mother woman who raised them. Not real much info on her.

Also got really annoyed at other shit like the numbers meaning nothing, people just randomly getting magical powers, the smoke monster making machine sounds but turning out to be Jacob's brother. A lot of shit doesn't make sense.

If the show started off as some kind of fantasy/magic based show people would be a lot more forgiving about these stuff but the whole time we were led to believe that there would be logical explanations for everything and we never got anywhere near anything like that.

Out of all the shows I've ever watched Lost feels to me like the biggest waste of time I'd ever spent on TV.

Is the recommendation then to just watch Season 1 and 2?

Watch all of it. Its a show that fits tje binge model really well. Just by reading this thread your expectations will be tempered accordingly

How long does 30 Rock take to become good? I’m 7 episodes in and while I’ve smiled a few times I think I’ve only really laughed at once, and it was a little forced.

For me it was around mid to late season 1 from memory, which may be fuzzy as its been almost 15 years since i first watched it. I recall it taking time for the relationship between jack and liz to hit its stride, but once it does the show as a whole starts to click

Almost all the great multi-season comedies have a relatively weak first season in my opinion. Comedies usually don’t have a special premise to drag you in, they're more reliant on the characters and their interactions.

Apparently Disney Plus outside America will from February include the other Disney-owned content from Fox and ABC, including R-rated stuff. Unless I'm misinterpreting something things like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Fargo, Justified, The Shield, Futurama, Archer and Atlanta should be on there as well as the entire library of 20th Century Fox movies. The price will go from £6 to £8, but for me (and I'd guess other people without kids) it's currently not a streaming service worth having.

It will be worth having for a month at a time if they follow HBO’s lead and put Black Widow and all the other big movie releases on the platform. It’s really the only sensible thing. They need to double down on the platform. They have 80m subs to Netflix’s 200m. You can tell they struggle due to their organizational complexity and existing contracts because they can’t just release one Disney+ globally. That’s what they should have with all the new Marvel movies. Would double their base quickly

They have 80m subs in 12 months, I think their potential is enormous actually.
