Not a fan of either of those shows for the same reason - way too fomulaic.

I rewatched Party Down during the lockdown - now that's a show worth seeing.

I haven't picked up on any of the references I must admit, though i've only really watched the films. I will say that it's definitely helped knowing where it fits on the timeline though thanks to whoever posted it in the film thread that one time.

As quincy said the last ep was chockful of stuff from other star wars mediums, and yet was also an entertaining episode if you dont have a clue about that stuff. Thats a good line to walk

Yeah I’ve seen all of those, though never quite got around to finishing the last season of community.

You're good with either of 30 Rock or Parks and Rec. If I remember correctly the first season of the latter is pretty rough (which is often the case with comedies) so if you go for that one be sure not to give up.

Another comedy that I never see talked about is Trial & Error. John Lithgow is a regular in it and it's really funny.

Edit: Also the Norwegian-produced Norsemen, which is on Netflix. Although I'm not sure how the comedy translates abroad even though they speak English. Not that I'm comparing the quality of that show to 30 rock and Parks & Rec. 😆

30 Rock is brilliant if you want non-stop jokes.

Yep I prefer 30 Rock too. Haven't seen all of Parks and Rec - the bits I have seen vary from a bit meh to very funny, whereas I found 30 Rock to be consistently funnier.

both have some great characters though - Ron Swanson is great in Parks and Rec.

One show that used to be funny in my childhood that I tried rewatching recently (it comes on one of those music channels on Sky) is Keenan and Kel. Man that did not age well at all. Feels so cringe watching it now.

Its a show for kids though isn't it? Like one of them Disney comedies. Keenans still funny on SNL though.

Pretty much, I did say childhood. Although not sure how young you mean when you say kids. I was about 9 or so when it started but it feels so cringe now. Some of the other American sitcoms around that time still feel pretty decent when I catch one from time to time.

I struggle to watch any of those old sitcoms with a laugh track. Something really changed in the construction of TV shows in the new millennium. The comedies got much better and the dramas skyrocketed. It's why I feel sorry for all the old American companies starting stream with a boast that they have an extensive library. No you don't. The only worthwhile shows were made this millennium and HBO has most of the dramas.

I think older comedies hold up better than drama. The Sopranos changed everything in drama, before that it was very much a week to week thing. Sitcoms aren't hugely different, some sensibilities change but its not the same seismic shift.

Yeah, we've all seen how stuff like Friends and have a massive second wave among the younger generation. the Fresh Prince too I think to a lesser extent. Seinfeld is still up there as one of my favourites for me. I probably re-watch old comedies more often than dramas too.

My university aged kids are getting into Seinfeld and loving it.

Blackadder still holds up in my opinion, and The Vicar of Dibley. Even Yes Prime Minister still has great relevance today. I guess politicians and civil servants don't change too much.

Great writing and comic timing will generally always endure.

ive been giving a couple of younger members of my family (around 18-21) a gradual history lesson on those late 90s/early 2000s premium shows. they all started a group watch of lost with much skepticism, and now its one of their favourite shows. its interesting that their arc of being totally invested is the same as mine back in 2004 - once you hit 'that' locke episode in season 1, you ain't stopping until the bitter end
