Have you guys watched HBO’s The Plot Against America? It’s like Hollywood in that it imagines an alternate reality for race relations in mid 20th century America. The show follows a group of secular Jews experiencing an America that elects a man called Lindbergh, a Nazi sympathizer, in 1940. The show is obviously a bit of a commentary on Trump but its release 4 weeks ago is timely. I doubt Trump will be sending Jews or Mexicans to the hinterland to integrate them into American culture but it’s worth thinking about how far unchecked power and hate can go.
Watched it this week and quite liked it. Hadn't seen the trailer, so expected something more over the top like The Man in the High Castle, but glad it was much more grounded. I get what Klaus is saying in that we have actual history to lean on so we don't need these imaginations, but I think that's part of why I liked it - that it doesn't seem like a far-fetched alternate reality.
The weakest part was that the kids were annoying as hell, although I understand why they needed to make them, and particularly the older brother, so. Really loved the stand-out performance of Zoe Kazan who played the wife, don't think I've seen her before.
