Now that will slowly decline and they'll be stuck with margins and economies of scale. Wouldn't be surprised if Prime beats them out due to subsidy from Amazon proper to be honest.

My money is on Disney. The amount of IP, cross selling and know how they have is ridiculous.

I think you end up with three different lanes: Netflix for adult consumables, Disney for family, and Amazon/Apple for quality. All 3 can coexist successfully. The Amazon/Apple lane will specifically require big budgets for high quality shows

I think a big argument for Disney not taking the throne is that their service will be exclusively PG-13. Many of the biggest streaming shows in general are slightly more gory, sexual or whatever it is that makes up the difference in age ratings.

Come to think of it, it doesn't take more than saying "fuck" if I remember correctly.

Speaking of, Amazon Prime is producing a Lord of the Rings TV series rumored to cost $1 billion.

Seems they're going all in with production, staffing, location, etc. The source material/plot will predate the LOTR trilogoy so it will serve as something of a prequel. Origin stories of Aragon, Gandalf, and co. could be quite interesting, but it seems the focus may be even earlier (around Sauron's beginnings, Evles at their peark, etc.) and pull heavily from The Silmarillion.

I got Apple for free for a year when I got my new phone but I haven't watched a thing on there. Anything worth checking out?

I've also barely watched Disney+ since finishing the Mandalorian and bingeing on the Star Wars prequels (yeah, that's right). The catalogue is all good and well but I don't think it's enough to keep people around. They badly need more new, original content.

My money is also on Netflix and Amazon, but the latter seriously need to work on their interface, it's atrocious. They also need to market themselves better because the whole Amazon Prime package is great value for money.

They are making new content, but Corona put a hold on a lot of it I think. They'll definitely draw some customers since they have three MCU shows coming up with the actors from the movies and they're also making a couple of SW shows I think, one of which is a Kenobi show with McGregor. Will they create new content that isn't an existing Disney IP though? Netflix are constantly making new stuff, and while 9/10 are bad they come up with some good stuff every now and then.

I don't personally think Disney+ will appeal to me but they've got the largest appeal for families, kids and nostalgic teens. Also Disney own ESPN and Hulu, if they figure out a way of bundling all 3 then there's no competition. The fact that they had the absolute nerve to charge $30 for Mulan to existing customers and grew their base to 60m in less than a year is impressive.

They have a bundle for Disney+/ ESPN+ / Hulu. The ESPN doesn’t include all the sports probably because of NBA and NFL rights issues.

It's gonna take place in the Second Age which begins from the banishment of Morgoth all the way until The War of the Last Alliance where Sauron falls to Isildur as shown in the opening minutes of The Fellowship of the Ring movie. From the LotR movies you can expect to see Elrond and Galadriel, but not really anyone else come to mind.

It's the least fleshed out time period in Tolkiens works, so some fans I've read speculate the main characters will be brand new to the planetos, maybe someone named by Tolkien but nothing else. The main plot will likely be driven by Sauron as he is the star of the show here, from constructing Barad-dur, forging the rings of power and warring with the elves, going to Numenor to wreak havoc and finally the last alliance. Other things I will be interested to see includes the settling of Moria and the beginnings of the Nazgul.

Yeah, I heard about this. I was always a fan of THE SILMARILLION and some of the other stories (Turin, Beren & Luthien) growing up, but I'm just not sure how that material would translate to television. Might be a costly failure.

If they do it well I reckon it'll be the biggest thing on tv this decade. I'd say this type of medieval cloaks and swords fantasy is pretty much guaranteed money in the bank. I couldn't believe Game of Thrones ever got as big as it did at the time, but in hindsight it was perfectly logical of course; just like Jackson's Tolkien adaptations, just like Skyrim. Amazon know what they're doing with this one.

Its a 2nd age story, so there won't be any silmarillion material in it. Theyre covering a period that was only cursorily written about by tolkien (apart from the chapter about numenor), so they have some creative license to fill in the gaps. Most of the casting so far has been for original characters not found in tolkiens writings

If its a hit, they could do future series about single chapters of the silmarillion. Beren and luthien or the tale of turin are stories with enough meat for a one-shot limited series. The tolkoen estate still has those rights ring fenced, but history has shown if you wave enough cash at them they'll sell up aulas-style

I'm surprised that this stuff wasn't considered good enough for the mainstream until the LoTR trilogy.

The Nazgul are second age. I would be shocked if we didn't see them. Moria I'm less sure about, you are probably right that's more first age/silmarillion stuff.

There's already a 5 season commitment so id be surprised if the nazgul dont pop up. Numenor is basically confirmed to be part of the story. It would be cool of they charted numenors downfall while also filling out what was happening in middle earth during that time
