Another show which needs a long think is Big Little Lies. Season 1 was one of the finest I’ve seen. Season 2 moved along on the strength of great set pieces more than storytelling and some of the lead characters were bobbing along without real influence on the trajectory of the storyline. Renata and Madeline were particularly marginalized

I'm really enjoying THE MAGICIANS. I've watched the first season in the past couple of days and I'm a couple of episodes into the second. Years ago I read the first two books and enjoyed them to some extent, but I think the show is probably better. It's an interesting cocktail of Narnia, Harry Potter, US college thrillers and some quite dark stuff.

It's really good. At first I thought it was just trying to be edgy Harry Potter, but it's much more than that. They flip a lot of tropes upside down, are self-aware with cliches etc., and it makes the show really funny in addition to the more serious parts. Oh, and the last episode is so great.

It's reminding me a bit of RIVERDALE which is another show I've enjoyed in the past couple of years. Post-Whedon but without the appalling limits of character, concept and dialogue. It's good stuff.

The fact Lev Grossman relied so much on his own experiences in the US cultural elite to write the books is a slight annoyance, and seems to leave a few blind spots in the work.

the boys is very good. went in pretty much blind other than a friend recommending it, and it didn't disappoint

karl urban is just good in everything

hopefully they don't spin it out too many seasons

THE BOYS is fun. I actually sort of loathed the more-Preacher-than-Preacher graphic novel which is the last comic I ever read. The TV show tones it way down and makes it better that way. Urban is funny in it. His Jason Statham versus Murray from Flight of the Conchords accent comes and goes like the tide.

Have been watching Derry Girls lately. It's really great. For those or you who don't know it's a comedy written by Lisa McGee, set in Northern Ireland during the 90s, and it follows a group of girls attending a Catholic secondary school. I went in blind too. Watching it coincided with me reading a lot about The Troubles lately.

Yeah Derry Girls is great. If you're watching it on Netflix and into learning about the Troubles at the moment theres a good Netflix documentary called The Miami Showband Massacre you should check out too.

The Troubles and Irish history that led to it is something I’d like to learn/read more about. But I’ve no idea what would be a good starting point.

I'd say a brief look at the home rule movement and then the Easter rising, followed by the War of Independence and then Irish Civil War would be a good enough back ground to things. Then the Troubles themselves came on the back of the Civil Rights Movement in NI. There was a decent documentary on the Civil Rights movement on Irish TV called '1968: The Long March' but it may be hard to find. Its probably on the RTE player if you have a VPN or something to make it look like you're in Ireland.

Binged mindhunter over the weekend. A bit different to season 1 with more time spent on an active case. Still quite enjoyed it.

Have finished both available seasons of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. I found it to be marvellous too. The two female leads - Rachel Brosnaham and Alex Borstein are excellent, as are Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle as Midge's parents. Tony Shalhoub and Alex Borstein in particular are great. The show got a tiny bit bogged down part way through season 1 but found it's rhythm. A third season is coming out in December.

The 50s costumes and music are just superb as well.
