Season 2 of True Detective had a lot of issues, but the pacing toward the end was great, I was drawn in and fully absorbed by it over the final few episodes.

Unfortunately most of the characters sucked, that was the big issue. Will definitely check out season 3, been excited since they cast Mahershasa Ali.

Watched a couple of shows since the holidays

Marcella - decent UK crime series. I'm a fan of shows that throw lots of red herrings but this one overdid it a bit. Also what on earth was that season 2 ending
House of Money - watched one and a half episode before I was too embarrassed and gave up. Absolute horseshit stay away don't watch
The Assassination of Gianni Versace - Netflix lists it as season 2 to the OJ Murder story. Was a bit hesitant in the beginning but it's disturbingly captivating
Narcos Mexico - not as good as the third season but better than season 1 + 2. Thought it was funny that they stuck close to the script for Colombia but then actually reduced the KPIs of Gallardo's business in order to make it look more realistic I guess
Patriot Season Two - not nearly as good as the first season, loads of filler scenes and even episodes but still great in patches. The scene with the Luxembourg cops in the bathroom is one of the funniest scenes in TV history

Loved Orphan Black. So happy something like that exists. I'm a big of Fawcett's Ginger Snaps as well. A truly feminist show in which the plot was just an excuse to construct some really great on-screen relationships in a way that the industry cannot usually adequately manage. The trashiness only made it more fun, for me.

I still haven't seen the last season of Orphan Black. I binged the four first seasons and then the fifth came out a year later and I had forgotten so much and didn't understand anything that was going on.

Watching the old French version of The Count of Monte Cristo on DVD - stars most of the Depardieu family - Gerard and his daughter feature, and his son has a small role.

It's in French with English subtitles, but there are clearly some characters, such as Bertuccio, speaking in a different language, probably Italian. Is this common in European TV?

Don't think so Asterix. From what I remember Bertuccio is indeed Italian in the book though. The name he gives to the boy he saves, Benedetto, means blessed in Italian.

Sounds like a great tradition! It was something of a Christmas film for me for a long time. Not that the film itself has anything to do with Christmas, but that's when I watched it the first time, and it just stuck around.

I didn't, but I'll have to look it up now!

I did watch and fell in love the Santa Clarita Diet though, which should be due a third season any month now. It's not really similar to Ginger Snaps, but it's a horror comedy that uses monster transformation (in this case zombiefication) as a way to explore feminism and themes of independence and female empowerment. It might be the funniest thing on tv at the moment.

Yeah, I watched the first six or so eps of Santa Clarita Diet but got distracted by life at some point. It seemed pretty good but it was also taking so very very long to get moving, as I recall. I'm not sure if I have the patience for TV just now.

I watched Santa Clarita too and enjoyed it much more than I thought I was going to. Genuinely funny.

I liked Santa Clarita too, though I personally don’t think Olyphant is right for the role. Also thought the neighbours had a lot of promise and was dissapointed in how quickly they become a non-factor.

Yeah but what they did with Nathan Fillions character was really funny while it lasted and probably wouldn't have been too funny if they dragged it out.

Speaking of Netflix shows that weren't that well received that I like anyway I just finished the 2nd season of Friends From College, I thought the first season was only ok but the second was much, much better. I thought it was absolutely hilarious. Every character is a massive arsehole in it though so if you don't like shows like that avoid it. The cast are phenomenal in the 2nd series, really get to play to their strengths.

The second season of The Punisher started out well, but after watching the entire thing I realize that he isn't actually doing much punishing, and when it seems to be building up to some big final episodes, it just kind of petered out instead. Bernthal is great in it though, the character is one of Marvel's best acted ones.

Thanks Klaus - yes, he is indeed Italian, so that would give the show extra realism. Nice touch.

The Guy Pearce and Jim Caviezel adaptation of the Count of Monte Cristo is a cracker, actually.

I just read that they're making a tv show based on The Warriors. It's been a year or two since there were any real news so I'm not sure if it's still in the works, but I'd watch that in a heartbeat. I think it has the potential to be really good. The Walter Hill film is a little overrated but very charming. I always loved Michael Beck's character in it. Dude literally brought a knife to a gun fight and won.
