I’m 4 episodes into Game of Thrones Season 1. Decided to watch it again because it was a bit of a blur. Expected it to feel a bit cheap due to the much lower production budgets. On the contrary, it comes across as a much better considered production than the latter years. The quality of the script and the writing is excellent. Scenes with Varys and Little Finger, or Jaime and Ned Stark have excellent dialogue. It’s all woven together smartly and paced well. Hopefully, the next season is more like this than the more recent ones. More emphasis on good storytelling than effects and set pieces

The closer to the books the show stays the better it is. Even the latter books where Martin is starting to get tangled in loose plot threads have a clear progression of key characters and themes that sometimes gets cut or banalised on Game of Thrones.

I do think they've done a better job with some characters than I initially gave them credit for though. I rewatched the whole show 5-6 months ago, and even in season 1 there are a lot more clues that point to, say, Dany's sense of entitlement when it comes to power than I picked up on the first time. I think it confirms that Martin gave them a specific outline of where the massive players are supposed to end up, and why.

I really liked the earlier seasons, felt like much better story telling. The ones in between largely lived off a the odd epic scene but were generally poor. The last season is living off many epic scenes, cheap and easy but it probably works.

The story from the beginning of A Game of Thrones up until somewhere after the Red Wedding is a masterful example of a myriad of carefully planned scenarios and characters actually coming together to make a compelling story. It's as good as modern fantasy gets in my opinion. It seems clear to me this was the story Martin saw in his mind when he wrote the books, Ned and Robert dying leading to the War of the Five Kings and Dany establishing herself in Essos. When the Lannisters won the war and Dany decided to stay and rule the story lost both things that pushed the plot forward. For sure GRRM knows where he wants his story to end, but not how he can get us there in a way to top or even match the earlier books in the series. But that's neither here nor there.

I agree about the first season being a strong one. The dialougue is pulled straight out from the books, you'd be surprised how much they stuck to Martins writing back then.

Watched half of sunny and just finished 2 seasons of veep and yup, this is the order for me for the three. Was hoping they were better than Curb-just greed- but no chance.

Say what you want about the guy but Silicon Valley without TJ Miller is really not same.

Just about to finish the true crime series The Staircase on Netflix. A tough watch but brilliantly put together.

I really enjoyed the first two seasons of Billions, but after watching the first episode of the 3rd, I'm left wondering how they'll keep this from getting old.

I've seen the first five episodes but I know how it ends. Really, really good documentary. I surely can't be the only one that feels he's guilty though? Despite the biphobia and the ridiculous investigators there are several extremely valid points that the documentary has just brushed past. Even when you take into account that the prosecution had it in for him, how many women do you know who have died from falling down a flight of stairs? It's such an extraordinary coincidence and I'm not buying the response from his legal team. They criticise the findings (and the language in the coroner's report is pretty unprofessional) but why didn't they conduct their own autopsy once the body was exhumed? It's obvious to me that they were afraid an independent analysis not in favour of Petersen would kill their case completely.

It's mostly documented through Peterson's perspective and thus biased in his favour but for me there's no doubt he's innocent. The technical evidence is in his favour and the alleged motive is close to non-existent.

I don't want to spoil it but I'm pretty sure you will agree with me after you see the stuff that is revealed after the trial.

Alex kissing Ellie was immense. The friendship between Jack, Adam and Alex is actually the best part of the show.

Also finally watched the first season of Stranger Things. I've always just assumed that it was overrated, but it was quite a charming show. Plenty of characters to care about, while the music and setting in general are also great.

Finally finished watched The Americans season 5. I’ve genuinely forgotten what happened in the finale. Only bothered as qs said the last season and s great.

I'd argue that if you're between the ages of 28 and 40, then Stranger Things (Season 1) is a must watch just for a nostalgia binge.....kind of like listening to The War on Drugs.

I really like Billions, one of my favorite shows below the top tier. Really good entertainment. They've managed to alleviate some of the concerns I had early on in the season too.

Has anyone watched The Rain on Nextflix? Seemed like an interesting concept and seems to have decent reviews but the first ep was really hard to watch.

Killing Eve seems very good. Just watched the first episode and it seems nicely set up. MI5 agent (Sandra Oh) chasing a female assassin around Europe. Jodie Comer is excellent as the narcissistic, sociopathic assassin Villanelle.

Started watching Santa Clarita diet, not completely sold on it. I actually think Timothy Olyphant is the weak point, doesn’t have enough charisma or personality for a show like this. The scenes when they’re trying to hide something in a conversation are usually terrible. Still an enjoyable light hearted watch though.

I think Olyphant is great in it. The main 4 cast are all pretty great IMO.

I've watched a handful of episodes, but I think it's pretty dubious.

Think it's interesting with Olyphant how his swagger as Seth Bullock or Raylan Givens has sort of mutated into a limp from an old football injury in Santa Clarita Diet. Think I remember reading he had one leg shorter than the other, or a hip issue, or something.

I've just watched the whole series as well. It's a bit tedious in places but a very compelling doco overall. It's definitely biased in his favour, but I definitely agree that he should not have been convicted on the evidence presented. The theory that comes out in the end is certainly interesting.
