If Chelsea get Subotic we should go in and see if Porto would be moved on David Luiz. Either way, we should follow their movements without bargaining against them to see if we can land whatever they don't take

Koscielny is far from a 'bust' imo. I think there's plenty there to work with and I can see him kicking on in his second season.

The more I think about it the less I think Cahill is the answer. I can see a situation where we spend £15 million on him and he's 4th choice by this time next season-I think TV, Djourou and Koscielny are all more talented than him. A good version of Squilacci would be ideal; someone experienced, tough, vocal and fairly short term, but not sure who that would be. That alternative would be to get someone who's a big step up from what we have, proven top class, dont know if Subotic fits that bill?

A cheeky £4 million bid for Christopher Samba maybe. Could be a decent option.

Given the utter shit we've seen in the last few games I'm starting to think Samba is a decent option, if for nothing else but just throwing up into the opposition box with about 10 minutes to go! At least he wouldn't be drifting around the wings trying to create when he should be in making himself a target, like Bendtner and Chamakh do all too often.

Seriously though, I still don't see Wenger going for a player of any great pedigree. We're more likely to snap up a rivals offcast than we are of going out and getting a quality defender. Wes Brown anyone?

i still see it that way, too, tam. in wenger's mind, he's got 3 top CB's (djourou, vermaelen, koscielny) and the #4 slot will be reserved for bartley next season or the season after. squillaci is just a placeholder so the team doesn't fall apart in the event of injury.

wenger's not going to buy another top class CB. he's going to look for another squillaci/silvestre/campbell, ie another short-term placeholder.

i still think we might be better off buying a good DM. i don't rate song as a CB, but as 5th choice, i think he's of reasonable quality and keeps the team from falling apart, which is all another squillaci/silvestre/campbell signing would do. plus, we actually have a need at DM, since i'm not convinced that frimpong, coquelin or eastmond will be legitimate replacements for denilson next season (though i hope one of them will).

I think you're right, Kam. We all want a Subotic or a Cahill, but realistically it's just not going to happen. And if we're all honest with ourselves, it would probably be a bad use of our resources given that we have two very good centrebacks on our books, and a third who could very well become a top centreback.

Didnt someone got a 19m bid for Luiz rejected? He would command far higher price than Subotic

I think Dules was right the other day when he suggested we should go for someone who can play more than one position. I just can't stand Eboue as a rightback. Last night was probably the worst performance I've ever seen from him but he's always underwhelming in that position. It's been going on for years now and he's getting increasingly worse for every season. He hasn't got a single defensive bone in his body.

Wenger sort of faces a conundrum. Let's say we bring in Cahill. Assuming Vermaelen reaches 100 percent by the beginning of next season, we'll have five CBs, three of whom (assuming Cahill hypothetically performs up to snuff) are qualified to start, plus one that was brought in to start and another that was brought in to ostensibly be third choice. A lot of you may be really excited by this prospect, but in reality it's hard to keep five players who quasi-expect to start on a consistent basis happy.

On the other hand, who the hell could we bring in for the rest of the rest of the season? Sol bolstered our title push last season, but he's horridly out of shape right now, and it's hard to assess if he'd be ready to play consistently right away.

This situation is a lot more complex than a simple signing. At the end of the day, you're dealing with the egos of millionaires, which can be horrendously tricky. It's hard to cut Wenger much slack for what's happened this season, but it's hard to envision a win-win situation in this case.

Agger was seriously bad against Blackpool the other night from what I'm told. I'd take him as a back up but then I don't see why he'd come here are a back up.
