Is it wrong that i wouldn't mind Upson? In terms of short term solutions, i think he might be ok.

Rumour is that we've bid £500,000 so even if it's not true it indicates that even the people who make this stuff up think he's past it.

He's part of a defence that has conceded 38 goals this season (second worst in the PL) so I can't imagine that he has either the form or confidence that we would require in this position.

I don't quite see how even as a stop gap that he could be seen as good enough given that whoever we do sign could potentially end up playing some key games.

The only thing he'd bring to the team is the fact that Song won't move into defence, and allow Denilson into midfield.

If you believe Young Guns, Bartley can't be recalled.

Would he have the quality and maturity required at centerhalf against premiership opposition? I don't believe his name should even be coming up as an option until perhaps the next couple of years, and he should be eased into the team gradually, premeditatively, not suddenly as an emergency stopgap.

If Wenger's honestly considering bringing him back, we might as well just fast forward to the beginning of next season.

The Vertonghens of this world can rest easy we're not coming to get them.
He also confirms that Fabianski is still his Number 1 just in case Sneezy is getting any ideas.

I don't think Koscielny is a 'bust' but I think for the timebeing (at least), that would be appropriate. He's got talent but not enough experience to have such a senior position at a club like ours. He'd be good quality back-up.

wenger's not going to buy another top class CB. he's going to look for another squillaci/silvestre/campbell, ie another short-term placeholder.

i still think we might be better off buying a good DM. i don't rate song as a CB, but as 5th choice, i think he's of reasonable quality and keeps the team from falling apart, which is all another squillaci/silvestre/campbell signing would do. plus, we actually have a need at DM, since i'm not convinced that frimpong, coquelin or eastmond will be legitimate replacements for denilson next season (though i hope one of them will).

Could definitely do with another DM but are you saying Bartley deserves the 4th choice spot or that's what will happen? If it's the former I'd have to question why you (and other of course) have so much confidence that he'll be able to step up given he has barely played a game for us yet?

And rightly so. Fabianski has done very little wrong lately, in fact, he's looked very assured. As much as I rate Szczesny, he still has it all to prove, and is clearly behind Fabianski right now.

just think that's what will happen. our more promising young players will be secondary backups, that's just logical. i haven't seen bartley lately, but he impressed last year (or was it year before?) in the carling cup and reviews of his loan spell seem to be positive.

chesney's kicking is the biggest obstacle to his promotion right now. it's awful - he just needs to practice it over and over. good to see him get playing time here and there, but fabianski is rightfully the clear #1.

Thats what I'd favour too Tim, whats the point of having all these good young players if we don't use them when we really need to?

Sheffield probably wouldn't have agreed on such a clause anyway if the issue was raised at all, and with good reason. Right now he might well be the difference between relegation and a new contract for them.

Bartley is not the answer in any case. He's only played a single game of top-level football in his life. Besides, the loan spell is doing his development a world of good.

If I'm not wrong, there is no option of a recall clause anymore.

that's not necessarily true because IIRC ManUre and Stoke recalled their players from Preston once Darren got sacked, no?

Something to do with Sheffield United paying us to loan Bartley for the season, and so insisting there was no recall clause. I think.

genuinely not sure but I think that loans have to run their course now. can't say where I got this impression at all and could be completely wrong.

I was under the impression that there are no hard and fast rules as regards loans, and its essentially up to the clubs involved to write the contract.
