Wenger is an absolute idiot for playing our best central midfielder wide.
This game also illustrates our lack of talent in the attacking positions; we can't go into a game against a strong opponent without making major compromises. Giroud so far in pre-season hasn't looked physically 100 percent. Even when he HAS been physically 100 percent, he has been absolutely shit every time against Chelsea; therefore it makes sense that he doesn't start here. On the other hand, if we DON'T start Giroud here, which means Walcott up front, we need to play at least one more player in the attacking 4 who is a credible goal threat. Chambo isn't it, Wilshere isn't it - which means we almost MUST play Ramsey wide. That in turn means that we move our best central midfielder wide, and we also compromise the brilliant understanding Ramsey has developed with Özil. It is a right mess.
Without Sanchez, Welbeck, Wilshere, Giroud (selection) and Rosicky available, the choice of players becomes automatic. The choice with Wenger was to play Giroud up front or play Ramsey wide. He went with the latter. We don't know how he'd choose if he had the likes of Sanchez wherein he had to make a choice between Ox and Cazorla.
With the Giroud call made, it was question of playing Santi in the middle, Ramsey out wide or playing Ramsey in the middle and a youth player out wide. I'm comfortable with the decision made. It's not about a credible goal threat, but, the decision is just the best way to pack in our best senior players in the first eleven.
