Of course the game and result are meaningless on the day, but just as obvious that it does mean something. Beating Mou's chelsea is a monkey we need to take off our backs.
For those with short memories, Utd were the same. The win in the FA cup was absolutely huge - we now don't even consider Utd among the "problem teams" for us, but we did, in a big way, before we finally beat them. Gotta do the same on sunday
( and then, obviously, repeat each time we meet them 🙂 ).

Don't agree that the FA Cup win lifted the United hoodoo as categorically as you suggest yuv.
We failed to beat them in the league.
I know that it's a neat idea - beat Chelsea in Community Shield => curse lifted => beat them in the PL but
there is nothing riding on the result of this game and it's a neutral venue.
Whatever the outcome, when our PL ties against them roll around this game will not hang over procedings.

I think Wenger will use the friendly match to further boost Debuchy's match readiness.
GK and CBs pick themselves and on the other flank, Gibbs has looked fitter than Monreal so he may get the nod.
Chelsea are very physical and so Coq is a must and i think he will start with Wilshere on the right wing with Ox coming on at the usual 70 minute mark.
Ramsey has looked very good this pre-season so this would be his chance to displace Cazorla from the first team.
Going by what we have seen, so far, i think the front three would be Walcott, Giroud and Oz.

All you say is legit, Y, just think you're underestimating the psychology involved.

And I personally don't see Utd as a mythical beast no more - we went and did this dragon in it's cave, and won the cup. They're a bastard team struggling for it's identity, as far as I'm concerned. Bit like pool 😆 .

How we as fans see United and Chelsea isn't really the issue here though is it?
As for misunderstanding the psychology - I wouldn't think so: if manager and players see defeat in this game as some kind of hammer blow to morale, or victory as an indication that we've got Chelsea's number, then I'd be concerned as to the strength of the mentality of all concerned.

I'm really looking forward to this, as a final bit of pre-season fun before proper, serious football commences.
I'll be dead happy if we win, fuming and annoyed if we lose.
Nothing too profound though.

Quality is all that matters on a football pitch. If you're good enough to beat Chelsea you're going to feel comfortable facing them no matter what happened in the past. I think it's unlikely that players like Özil and Alexis are even aware that we have a particularly poor record against Mourinho. And even if they did they wouldn't pay attention to it.

It's pretty clear that Wenger's not worked out an optimum way of beating Mourinho yet. It's not just the record but more how we set up against them with limited success.

Definitely, but I think that has more to do with Wenger's inherent flaw as a manager. He's never been able to commit fully to his own beliefs. He wants that attacking, free-flowing football but he always ends up sacrificing a bit of genius for the sake of balance. And when that compromise backfires he tries to make up for it by throwing everything forward. But at that point it's too late of course.

There were so many games in the last two seasons where we would have stood a better chance if we had just fielded our best attacking lineup to begin with. Instead Wenger settled for half a thing. And when we went down a goal he often took off a defensive midfielder for a striker and made it worse. It's one of the more infuriating aspects of his management. But I do think it all boils down to the fact that he knows the team is short on top quality.

i wouldn't care much if it was any other team, but we need to end this Mourinho spell. it must be embarrassing for a top manager like Wenger to know that he's never defeated the guy. even if teams are financially doped and you're paying of stadium debts, as a top 4 team you should be able to beat them once in a while. Mourinho has Wenger's number. he knows how to blitz him when he's attacking naively, and he knows how to create a stalemate when we are more reserved.
it's a pity that Alexis is away because i think that more than any other team, a Mourinho Chelsea really needs us to lean on moments of superstar brilliance to win

basically if we minimise cheap errors we can beat chelsea (sorry ox, bench for you lad). i want us to make a statement even if it is a poxy fixture in the scheme of things. we're probably fitter than they are, let's make it count and go for the win

the arsenal-chelsea fixtures this season will have the most edge of all the top teams. wenger and maureen have the most well established antipathy, as far as managerial rivalries go

But the psychology thing - I wasn't even referring to fan's attitudes, I was only thinking of the players. How they will come out of this game, and use whatever the outcome to better prepare for the real games is the important part. But the idea that they don't carry some kind of psychological load re chelsea is too optimistic. They do.

So this game, friendly/preseason/whatever, has a special bonus option with it. We should take it with both hands.

Wasn't suggesting at all that the players wouldn't be fussed yuv- clearly nobody wants to lose this and winning would be ace 🙂
For me this "psychological load" versus Chelsea theory will only be tested in proper competition, home and away, with all that entails .
If you see it that a win in a pre-season game in a neutral venue will imbue the team with strength when we head to Stamford Bridge fair enough, I don't feel that it will have any significant impact.
We'll see I guess 🙂

Well, it can't HURT the players' belief that we can beat Chelsea when it matters if we beat them on Sunday, so, let's try to beat them on Sunday. 🙂

Beating them now may of course also make the Chelsea players less confident for when it matters.
