Oh I agree with that - but that's more to do with Almunia being horribly out of his depth than anything else.

I don't think he deserved to be dropped the second time around anyway, he only made one error against Blackburn in the second game of the season and that was it. Unusually harsh from Wenger.

Seem to remember he had a horrible moment in the first game as well. Still, he was a lot better than Almunia.

Wow... reading this brings back the images, and I shake my head in disbelief - we actually had shit players like Almunia, Denilson, silvestre -
all in the first team, quite recently. We should use that disgust to keep us on our toes always - get rid of dead wood ruthlessly. Flamini, Arteta, Debuchy, maybe not as bad as what we had before, but perhaps in a few years we'd be asking ourselves why we waited so long.

Rex is right.. I can't remember exactly what happened but Lehmann was at fault for Fulham's goal on the first day of the season too.

Pretty sure he made a silly dribble and got intercepted. Luckily Hleb bailed us out that day.

Lehmann made two howlers in the first two games of the season in 07/08. He was rightly replaced by Almunia who did ok that season. He may have even finished top 3 in our player of the year votes the following season. Outside of those two seasons, Almunia was pretty dire of course.

Was stupid defending from both Kos and Per when Gomis was clean through, but Cech made it extra difficult for him as well. That's the sort of situation which could have turned the game completely, and Cech has a LOT of those so far. Long may it last.

You can say a lot about Mourinho, but Abramovic going over his head to sell us Cech was incredibly stupid, and Mourinho rightfully tried to stop it.

I love Cech already.

Impeccable after day 1 of his career here.

Even a keeper like him or De Gea can save so many clear cut chances though.

He has made a few mistakes but has more than made up for them, so good having a half decent keeper between the sticks again.

I wouldn't say stupid at all, Roman is a man of his word. He promised Cech last season if he stayed he would let him go wherever he wanted. Roman isn't stupid enough to see that joining Arsenal would harm them as it would improve us but he had given his word. To Mourinho giving your word may not mean anything but it did to the person who bought him there and his decision was final. He'd be setting a dangerous precedent by letting Mourinho overrule him as well.

Courtois is a good keeper who'll be around for years.

Giving us Cech only really costs Chelsea if they drop points to us or we win the title, neither of which has happened yet.

I'm as happy as anyone we got Cech but I'm not sure Abramovich warrants that type of praise for that alone.

Chelsea wouldn't have missed a beat if Courtois hadn't missed as many games as he has. Cech is only a clear upgrade on Begovic, and I mean that more as a compliment to the Belgian than any demerit on our current standard bearer

They've been so shit overall though, Courtois/Cech likely wouldn't have helped much either

This guy is the best GK in the premier league era.

Outdoes Schmeichel too for longevity. He was Chelsea's best player in their CL winning campaign.
