I know but being complacent doesn't make me feel better about it. If anything, it's worse. I'd rather we tried out best and then lost.

It's not even complacency after a good start to the season either - it was literally the first game!

To be fair it was an issue even back then, I remember tons of games where we'd be playing in second gear, really slow, drab affiars. It's just we were better and the opposition were worse so we'd win anyway and the shock results were less frequent.

I don't think it was an advantage or disadvantage. They were about as well prepared as we were

If I remember correctly they were leading by a couple of goals in the first leg against some
random team and probably felt they had done enough.

I remember reading a West Ham fan being particularly fed-up with their pre-season.

And we did field very poor starting XI's in all of the Europa League games. What people don't realize is that we started the EL campaign on July 2nd. It completely disrupted our pre-season, a pre-season with a new manager and a lot of new players. We literally had to have two separate pre-season squads as there was just no way our team could prepare for every single game collectively, and it made it a complete nightmare for Bilic having to travel between both squads.

Playing seperate teams made it even worse.

Sounds like excuses from the West Ham fan though - Southampton managed it despite having half their squad injured. Ok, they didn't have a new manager but otherwise they also had to face a better team in the qualifier
