Yeah it's like van Gaal has built a side that is designed to grind out 1-0 wins. Incredibly boring to watch considering the money they have spent.

I think that's pretty much how van Gaal wants it to be though. Maybe a few more attempts at goal ideally, but he thinks it's more important for strikers to occupy the centrebacks than to have a lot of ball. He described a perfect striker as not having more than 13 ball touches per game.

It's why he romanticised players like Olic during his time at Bayern and got into arguments with guys like Ibrahimovic and Rivaldo in his previous clubs. It's why van Persie is no longer a United player too. Injuries had something to do with it of course, but the biggest problem wasn't his poor goal output in his final season. It was his workrate.

I always thought the best strikers try to have the maximum number of shots on target - c.Ronaldo, Messi, van Persie and Henry forever peppered the goal whenever they had a chance

And it's not like the United midfield have anyone who can score goals anyway - mata and maybe depay if he steps up a level

Yeah it's a weird attitude, but it's part of this idea van Gaal has about football being a tactical invention rather than a sport where individuals make up teams. The most important guy at any given club he manages is himself. It's not without merit to be honest but it produces some tedious, boring bullshit on the field.

I think he's clashed with pretty much every big ego and football idealist at this stage. Johan Cruyff hated his guts when he was at Barcelona, much like most of the fans and the Spanish press. A feud with Koeman was the reason he resigned as sporting director at Ajax. Stoichkov is another guy who can't stand the sight of him; he actively advised Pedro the other week not to go to United because he was convinced van Gaal would wreck him.

Makes sense though, redcafe are up in arms about some interview Herrera have where he said van Gaal discouraged movement from his players.

Can't remember the details but it was about players moving in specific ways and discouraging them from basically using their own judgement

That's probably why Herrera can't get a game despite being their most creative midfielder by miles
