Yeah it's a weird attitude, but it's part of this idea van Gaal has about football being a tactical invention rather than a sport where individuals make up teams. The most important guy at any given club he manages is himself. It's not without merit to be honest but it produces some tedious, boring bullshit on the field.
I think he's clashed with pretty much every big ego and football idealist at this stage. Johan Cruyff hated his guts when he was at Barcelona, much like most of the fans and the Spanish press.
