I'm not Higuain's biggest fan but I'm quickly approaching the stage where any half decent striker will do for me. His goal scoring record is unbelievable, he has improved a fair bit while out in Italy.

Indeed. If we have the money then we should pay it. Who cares about perceived market value? The global market for strikers is strained to the breaking point. The few greats out there won't move. Even average players and young talents are going for premium fees right now because clubs are stocking up in panic.

... And then there's Higuain: a world class striker with one year left on the contract who's looking to move. He was so disgustingly good last season that he broke a 50 year old goal record and is being compared to Maradona in Naples. He played 41 games and still averaged 1 goal per game for a club like Napoli. It's a bloody no-brainer. We'd win the league with him next season and have a decent shot at Champions League too. Who cares what happens beyond that.

The thing is that you can't have it both ways. You can't massively underinvest in the squad by arguing that 'there are no top players available', only to then refuse to spend money when they are available on account of some theoretical scenario in which they flop. That makes no sense. Remember how we didn't buy a single outfield player last summer and failed? I'd rather fail while doing something than doing nothing. The absolute worst case scenario leaves us roughly where we are now, but at least we've shown some ambition.

It certainly is. We need to add, not swap. Also, the price is ridiculous. I would not pay more than £50m for him, even that is a little stretch.

What's the difference between 50 and 60 mm? Honestly. If it means getting rid of another pointless waste of space in our squad, let's do that by all means. I'd rather have a squad 1 smaller than today with one more top quality player than keep some of the garbage we have currently hanging around. Just because we could have signed him for half the price three years ago doesn't mean we shouldn't pay what it takes today to get what could be a critical component of our team today. Sometimes you have to just bite the bullet and accept reality. Alternately, we move to a 4-3-1-2 and buy a lesser striker, who doesn't have to do it all on his own. Either way, requires Wenger to get off his behind and unzip his coat.

I think we could make do with Walcott as the main backup as long as we got someone like Higuain. It's not ideal but I'd take it. It's reasonable to expect improvement in Theo's case too; there's very little chance he'll manage to be as dirt poor again as he was last season.
