Yeah, criticism of Higuain's past performances is perfectly valid. Last season I wouldn't have wanted him here either.
Things change though. He's been world class this season from beginning to end, and I say that as someone who didn't think much of him before. He's going to switch clubs this summer, and it will probably be the most expensive transfer in Europe unless Pogba moves. That's how good he is. I get the scepticism that he might not have another season like this one, but you could say that about most players. Everything is a calculated risk.
Something that speaks to Higuain's advantage is that he has never struggled to score goals in his whole life. Other parts of his game were missing in the past, but it looks like they have fallen into place now. I used to criticise him for being unable to make space for himself up front. This season it has been the perhaps most impressive feature of his game.
