Saw that. Unlike Wenger, I think attacking through possession in the middle third is over rated. In fact, that type of game is how we usually get in trouble with dangerous turnovers, the Liverpool game a case in point; we try to play it out from the back with short passes, we lose possession in the middle when the whole team is moving forward, too many players are, naturally, in poor positions to defend well, we end up gifting the opposition premium chances to score.
We'd be much better off, IMO, to have a game plan where we mostly look for a longer ball to the forward line when we win back possession deep in our half. If the counter is on, then we go for it with Alexis, Walcott, Mesut and Chambo, supported by Ramsey using his engine to provide that support. If the counter is NOT on, then the forward line plays it back and THEN we can control the middle of the park.
If we lose the ball when trying to play the more difficult, longer, riskier ball to our forward line - it doesn't really matter. We'd still have 7 or 8 players behind the ball in good, defensive positions.
That is what I'd like to see, and it would be one way how the team could adapt to NOT having the silky Cazorla in central midfield, and NOT having the big, traditional target man at number 9.
