I know what you mean, but I can't help but laugh.
A few years ago in Fergie's last season he dropped Rooney to play Welbeck against R.Madrid in the home leg. Welbeck stuck to Alonso like glue all game and completely took him out of the game. Years previously Fergie had done the same by man marking Makelele.
Welbeck is a limited player in a few departments but what he does well, he does very well. Just look at the cup final, no way in hell would have someone like Giroud been able to pressurise their defence like that. We were able to stop them building and harass them high up the pitch. We forced loads of errors out of them in that first half playing this way. Β In some away games I would want Welbeck to start over him and then bring Giroud on later on in the game when the defenders are tired. That is when Giroud has been at his most devastating for us, top class bench option. Not good enough to start most games for us though.
It is important to have players with different skill sets. I think we have a decent mix of options up top right now.

We don't need a specific forward to man mark Matic or anyone. Any forward we have can play that role.
No you don't but I just gave an example of a tactic which has worked and if you choose to go down that route you need someone who will actually do their job. Man marking isn't just about following someone around, it is about knowing when to press, knowing which passing options to prevent. You need a lot more intelligence to your game than some of our lot do. Tactically he is a very smart player, a shame about some of the other parts of his game!
