I think the lack of credible activity in this thread is more depressing than the lack of signings. I know the stock of our players is low and they're on high wages, but compromises can be made. At this point I'd even take a loan fee for guys like Mustafi.

The one guy we should’ve put work into moving was Xhaka given how much he defines the shape of the squad in both directions. And I suspect some Bundesliga or Serie A club would’ve put up 15-20m pounds and taken the guy as a regista. That would have helped us move towards recruiting a more dynamic, athletic team.

Mustafi is the harder one. Which scout will look at this low confidence version of Mustafi and risk inserting him in his defense? What we have now is not the German national team Mustafi. It is but a husk. You’d need a scout/coach who would have to believe that he can get through the anxieties to the player he once promised to become

To be honest, it is unreal.

Forgetting how we rate the players, there are plenty of clubs who hope to even fight for European football.

Ozil is understandable, but Xhaka, Mustafi and co? Unbelievable

The thing that makes it worse is that Emery will pick them.

It looks more likely than not at this point that Mustafi, Kolasinac, Xhaka and Mkhitaryan all start against Newcastle. Even after the Europa League final, most Arsenal fans would have thought the days of Özil trotting around were done, he at least has his brilliant monents, but he'll be starting too. At this point you'd even get good odds on Carl Jenkinson starting the match, and possibly as a right wingback!

We can still sell to Europe and China for another 5 weeks, but it seems unlikely any of these guys are going anywhere.

All of those guys are going to cost us massively next season, and we will be Europa League contenders once again for the fourth consecutive year. Replacing Xhaka should have been one of the priorities of the season. He gave away an absolutely ridiculous unforced penalty against Brighton in one of the penultimate games of the season. Should have been docked two weeks wages and sent to Guantanomo Bay. I don't know who is responsible for his continued existence at the club, so I'm just going to blame the club as a whole. These shit bags are going to cost Emery his job, so if he's not the reason, then he needs to expose who is.

Agreed in regards to Emery.
He's on an initial 2 year deal with an option on a 3rd, and considering the cluster f*ck that the club is in atm it is hard to see him achieving top4 and the club activating the extension. Must be really hard for him to remain motivated when he has essentially been dealt a losing hand.

Then Emery needs to grab control, and even play the kids, if he thinks they will perform better.

A young defender would make as many mistakes as Mustafi. So I would go with the young player and develop him.

As many mistakes as Mustafi makes, we'd probably look worse with said kid. It's not as easy as saying they'd make the same amount of mistakes, therefore it'd be the same.

I mean Mustafi is a mess but throwing in a Bielik type is asking for lashings of pain. Central defence is a beast of a job

Yep at worst Bielik doesn’t turn out to be the player we expect, and we cut our losses. With Mustafi we know he isn’t the player we expect so why is he still being given chances to prove it.

Benching Mustafi and think that there can only be upside sounds like the "it couldn't possibly get worse" thought process that got Trump voted in.

As bad as Mustafi is, a worse defender would lose us even more points than he does, which is why Mustafi plays.

I think the point is I categorically refuse to believe Bielik can be as dumb as Mustafi. Nobody can be worse than that. We are not talking about some lesser talent like Medley, that I can understand preferring Mustafi.

As things stand, I would rather play Chambers, Bielik or Mavropanos instead of Mustafi. They might make mistakes at first, especially the latter 2 but with game time they will be better. Mustafi will always make silly mistakes at critical moments.

It depends on the pairing too. Kolo Toure could be groomed next to a Campbell. We don't have a top tier defender and leader anymore and inserting a young talent can backfire big time.

Also, individual mistakes cost the team and the player. Not every individual recovers from the kind of hit confidence can take. We really need to invest in a center half for this season too.

Fair point. Can't believe our most senior defender is now Sokratis who can sometimes be very rash as well.

The lack of CB link is pretty worrying, nothing concrete with 2 weeks to go.

I didn't say "it couldn't possibly get worse" it's a case of you know what you're getting with Mustafi, decent play mixed in with a crucial error which costs the team a trophy or points (inconsistency is the last thing you want in a CB). We don't know what we are getting with Bielik or other young CB's at the club, people were sceptical of Coquelin and Song also when they came back from Charlton on loan but Wengers faith in them and giving them minutes made them into players.
