Nope. Nobody is signing Ramsey on a £220-250,000 per week contract. That’s the problem with this archaic system of wage communication. People lose sense of the full cost. That’s over £11m a season. The reason you’re not just going to throw an extra £5m at Ramsey because he is free is because he doesn’t have proven health. If he doesn’t get healthy, then you’re stuck paying £11m a season to this guy who is in and out of the team, destabilizing your plans. Is he a starter? Is he a sub? And nobody is going to help you by picking up that contract. So you’ll be stuck paying all 4 of 5 years of that (about £50m pounds).
Contrast with someone like van Persie. Ferguson was all over van Persie because he had gone 18 months without injury. He seemed to have turned a corner and was the best striker in England- no debate.
The more I think about why Ramsey and Wilshere will not get big money elsewhere, the more I start to worry that they are a big part of the problem here. That maybe it’s time we push them down the pecking order. Bring in a Fabinho and a Dembele to operate behind Ozil, relegate these boys, and sell Xhaka.
