I said we needed 3-4 top-class signings in addition to internal improvement if we want to win the league. Cech is one of those top class signings. I honestly don't get you lagos. How is spending £10 million on a goalkeeper going to impair our ability to go after a striker?
It's beyond me how anyone can question the need for a great keeper. We benched Szczesny for a guy who doesn't even have a neck and improved immensely... and Ospina wasn't all that great either; he just avoided fucking up for the most part. This is exactly how you craft a title-winning team: you refuse to settle for players who are merely decent. We've needed drastic improvements in the extreme ends of the team for years, because that's where you win the games.
Actually I'm with you, I'm just saying Cech is just one of a few players of that level we need and while I welcome Cech, I'm not getting excited until I see the other quality signings, because if Cech is all we get, then he won't make enough of an incremental difference to make us title contenders. Just like Ozil didn't and Sanchez didn't!
That's fair enough, but you need to recognise this for what it is: we're signing a guy who's been among the 5-10 best players in the world on his position at pretty much any given point for over a decade. That's simply invaluable. It's an incredible amount of talent and experience that will likely improve our defensive shape too.
You said that any signing in isolation won't make a difference if the surrounding players aren't good enough, but how do you improve the surrounding players? You buy better players! If we get Benzema now, for instance, he'll slot into a team where we already have Özil, Alexis, Cech, Koscielny and Ramsey. Compare the situation to when we signed Özil and only had Kos who was anywhere near a top player... it's like night and day. Odds are that someone like him will actually be able to push us over the edge to greatness now, because we've moved closer towards it little by little.
