Chelsea won the league with 87 points, Falcao is coming in on loan and Jose has said they are looking for a midfeilder and a defender and we are getting excited because we are signing Cech?

I know it's early days but this is not a game changer, where are the goals coming from?

to me its a signing that gives me cautious optimism that we're serious in the market this summer. not because its a big financial outlay, but because never in a million years did i think we'd actually strengthen our goalkeeper. weve all lambasted wenger for not being ruthless enough when things are going well - this bucks that trend somewhat

We only scored 2 goals less than Chelsea last season, though I agree we need a better striker as well to gain an edge in the big games. Meanwhile, I'd argue we've need a better goalkeeper since 2007. It's just that finding a top goalkeeper is harder than finding a top striker. Admittedly Cech's world class days are behind him but he's a tangible improvement to what we have now and really that's the policy we should continue to have.

Too often we've sat around waiting for the perfect player to become free instead of grabbing marginal improvements wherever we can find them. You saw how much of a difference even having someone like Bellerin made to our attack and defence from the right back position - even though individually he's not world class yet. But it was an improvement that had a multiplier effect across the team. The same could be said for swapping Monreal for Gibbs or Coquelin for Arteta/Flamini.

any signing that does not make us genuine title contenders is a meaningless signing, If for all the excitement we end up 3rd/4th, what have we gained?

Cach is a welcome signing don't get me wrong but only as part of larger reforms. Cech, Osipna, Almunia, Fabianski, Szczesny.....it all makes no difference if we end up 3rd or 4th. We need the players that will kick us beyond 3rd/4th.

A world class keeper saves you at least 5 to 10 points a season, that alone may take us 2nd, we need a proper striker now to make the team genuine challengers to 1st spot. We will have sorted out the two positions in the team that can win you points directly.

How is one related to the other? Cech will improve us far more than 4 goal Falcao will improve Chelsea who already have a far better player in that position. We're imroving our first XI and they're adding some depth.

As someone who advocates increasing the level of our first team in favour of depth and padding, I'm surprised to see you taking this stance.

I dont necessarily think goals are our problem. We scored exactly 2 goals less than Chelsea last year.

Our problem was conceding at the wrong times. (City at home after taking the lead and then allowing them to score with 7 mins left, Swansea away allowing 2 goals in the last 15 minutes to squander a lead [or Gomis in the 85th minute at the Emirates], Skrtel in 7th min of ET away v. Liverpool, a late Kane goal away v. Spuds)

Maybe (if this is true), Cech can help us with that. We take full point from most of those matches, we are much much closer to Chelsea in the end (and in second ahead of City).

I still think we'll bring in someone up front.. but our defence has been the death of us for a number of years.

you dont think someone like Cech can help us get past that? He's better than all other 4 keepers you mentioned.

I agree - but no one signing will take you from 3rd/4th to 1st though - for that you're looking at the top 4-5 players in the world and they're all happily signed up at Barcelona, Madrid and Bayern. It's a harsh fact but we'll have to accept that.

From our perspective, we'll have to focus on a combination of things to get the league title, including maybe a more tactically aware manager, fix the mentality of the team, sort out our injuries etc. And as part of that, making small improvements to the team will also help that cause. Also if Cech reverts to his old form (open to debate) he's as good as signing a new striker - that's a big if though.

I think thinking of attack and defence as separate entities is flawed concept anyway. It's not one or the other that wins you the league. The overall quality of the team has to be at a certain level to win the league and improving a weak point in the squad with a top quality player raises our level considerably.

Not excited or dismissive, I'll need to see him play first. Whenever I've seen him recently I've not been that impressed but appreciate that he should still have a couple of years as a top level GK. Actually the biggest indicator that he's still top notch is that Arsenal are willing to pay £10m. Arsene's obsessed with value for money, so him paying £10m for a 33 year old GK suggests he knows Cech has a lot to offer and is a class above Szczesny and Ospina.

Haven't followed this story at all. Are we signing him? Dead certain?

If so, I think it is a good signing. Top 10-15 GKs in the world imo and certainly a step in the right direction. Still need about 2 world class players to come into the side to have a realistic chance of winning the pl next season.

Unless Cech's going to experience a complete collapse in form signing him is definitely a game changer.
Introducing the experience and maturity of a multiple title winning keeper into our defense will elevate that defence.
We saw already this season the impact of demoting Szcz and promoting Ospina, this is another step up.

I note it hasn't been made official though 🙂
Might be getting prematurely super positive.
