Nothing dumb about how we played today, I agree we could have done better in the last 10 minutes but we don't have the players to cross the ball. All in all it's as good an away performance as you get.

It's the home leg that was fucking stupid

Hard to be too critical of the players though. Everyone was good, except maybe Walcott in his short cameo. We just didn't test the goalie enough.

Cazorla was the only one who kept his composure and kept the passing game flowing. Ozil and Ramsey were both forcing issues and losing the ball. I would have started with Ramsey over Cazorla at the start of the game, but my point stands.

We've employed it. We haven't had a peak Lehmann, Gilberto and Henry to really make it work.

so moving on, how will the team take this "defeat"? will they use it to fuel a continuation of their winning streak, or will they beat themselves up about throwing away such a chance?
also, with other English teams exiting so early, we would've made out like bandits financially by making it to the QF.

Indeed, if we had only 30 minutes where we were on the back foot in a CL away leg then it's fair to say we've done extremely well.

No - it's more about the quality of our play once we're not on the back foot - passive dominance etc.
Our tactics in the last 10-15 mins raise the question as to how we intended to score the 3rd goal, and why didn't we have more shots at goal?
Crossing the ball was a departure from our usual stay patient and work an opening approach, but our execution was poor and we persisted with it without looking to secure the 2nd ball to put a shot at goal on target.
It was like watching a re run of the league loss to ManU.

By the way, this is going to sound bitter right now, but I've always thought that away goals is a stupid rule.

You cannot neglect the fact that he kept possession in tight areas and kept our team going. When Ramsey came on we lost plenty of momentum because he kept getting dispossessed. That's crucial.

Honestly speaking, and relative to this performance on hindsight, the person that should have been sacrificed is Alexis.

Cazorla barely played in any tight areas and was taking too many touches in space. He was better than Sanchez, but was very passive overall.

we won the game (even if we did lose the tie). Keep that momentum going.. secure automatic qualification for the CL. get to the FA Cup Final and smash those scouser fucks.

The lads will be disappointed for going out, but we did handily win the game, regardless of the overall tie.

I was hoping we could do it once Ramsey scored our second, but I'm not heartbroken over it. We didnt have a "realistic" shot at winning the CL this season.

Aggreed the Home leg was stupid, but the point in bold is dumb = why persist if you can't make it work?
Why not got to a genuine 433 / 4222 shape and break with numbers?
Why not play a genuine 2 man attack with Walcott/Sanchez playing as a genuine SS off Giroud/Welbeck?
Why play 424 with 5 players ahead of the ball and static around their area?

We didn't need to keep possession, we just needed to win the ball back once we lost it. There weren't many tight areas because Monaco didn't press. We would have broken them sooner if we had tried them. Coquelin should have stayed on, Ramsey should have started, Monreal shouldn't have gone off in a million years.

... It doesn't really matter in the end though. We lost this tie three weeks ago. The rest is just after the fact and beside the point.

Cazorla was good. Kept switching the play and brought others into things
