As with the rest of the team, nothing changes in the grand scheme after a couple of good performances. If Mesut can keep performing like he did against Germany and United, I'm sure there won't be any calls for him to be replaced or moved. Just like if Wenger gets the team to play like we did against United week-in-week-out, people wouldn't mind him staying, but you already know that there's a Zagreb or Olympiacos game for every superb performance like that.

Fans are reactionary to performance, that's just the way it is. Obviously, for different reasons, people have their favourites that sometimes get off with things others would get criticised for, but for the most part, I think this forum is pretty well balanced in its assessments.

He's had a great 2015 though and that was acknowledged here in this very forum. Even this season he's been one of our better players before the United game. The reaction after Olympiacos game was wa OTT.

I agree about him having a great 2015. Much improved from his first year at the club.

I'd expect the sort of form he showed this spring to be the norm for a player of his quality and reputation though. For me, he hasn't quite been as good in the early part of this season. Being one of our better players doesn't say much, since bar one or two, our lot have been abysmal.

Bar a few who were talking about selling him, I wouldn't say the reaction was that OTT. Calling for change of system and trying different players with different skill-sets in his position is pretty reasonable, given how shit we were as a team that night.

Players like Ramsey, Giroud and Santi go through all of this on a regular basis as well, so it's not like Özil is singled out to be the scapegoat/Biggus of this forum.

A few calling for him to be sold, a few proclaiming he doesn't fit anywhere in our system and others calling for him to be dropped. This is based on a couple of poor games at the start of the season in a very good 9 month period for the guy.

I questioned Ozil as much as anyone in the first year and a half but that reaction was very OTT in my opinion. Understandable maybe given the context of the game and the mood at the time but no less unreasonable.

I think your "very good 9 months" is a bit of an exaggeration. He's been very up and down. He needs to show a lot more consistency if we want this team to achieve anything.

That's what happens to most attacking players who aren't Ronaldo or Messi.

Costa, Fabregas, and Hazard have all suffered badly. Sanchez went on a run of 4 goals in 21 games. Even Aguero has a few small runs of bad form, as well as longer periods out injured.

We can't expect Ozil (or Sanchez) to carry us every game, we need others to step up. Someone like Ramsey, who hasn't scored this season is one suggestion.

He needs to be putting in more performances like the United game.

Ozil wasn't as good as any of Sanchez, Aguero, Fabregas or Hazard last season. He wasn't even close. That's the level he should be at but he's not. He has it in him but he doesn't show it nearly enough.

truth is playmakers vanish in this league for stretches. i havent seen a creative midfielder be consistent for a whole season in england. they lack the physical staying power. the much lauded silva and hazard have 2-3 months of indifferent form every season. peak cesc disappeared from february/march. used to happen to scholes too. the closest was bobby in 02, but who knows if he wouldve been able maintain his level if he didnt get injured.

i think if ozils at his best for 75% of the season and shows up in crunch games, thats a great season

Maybe, but it was still at the very least a good 9 months from him, and pretty consistent I thought. My only criticism in this period is his performance in games where it felt like we needed his creativity, Monaco and Chelsea for example, and a couple of games this season, where he just didn't deliver anything of note.

I'd say it wasn't his creativity against Chelsea that was lacking, it was more his lack of ability to put the ball in the net from 5 yards 😆

He was absolutely fantastic until February, which was followed by a drop in form together with the whole team, and later on an injury.

Nothing different to the likes of Silva, Hazard, Fabregas, etc. whom people like to suck off so dearly. Cesc hasn't been seen since november last year, he has been shit. Silva was average last season as well, and Hazard is showing right now what a momental fraud he is.

We have the best no. 10 in the world, enjoy while you can.

Watched the game last night, and he was glorious, he created around 10 chances at least. Tremendous player.

That would definitely be a great season, let's hope for that this year. First of all he'll need to stay fit though.

I just wish he'd put some effort in on the training pitch into improving how he attempts to put the ball into the back of the net. Then he'd be an absolutely glorious player. The amount of good positions he finds himself in and then fails to finish is quite staggering. If he could hit a ball properly, he'd score 15 a season without even changing his game at all. He can't generate any power without lots of backlift and he can't hit anything hard with the inside of his foot - shameful from a player of his immense abilty, really.

As you can probably tell, it frustrates me a lot.

Just to add, I don't think I've seen another player that has a better appreciation of his team mate's movement than Özil. He makes the right deciison 95% of the time and executes nearly every time too. He's a genius footballer.

It's amazing how quick perspectives change on here. At least give it a month or two of observation before we all jump on the bandwagon. He's basically had two or three good games all season and he's the best thing since Alexis Sanchez.

It's not about the Georgia game. 😆

It's about the ridiculousness of people who'd rather start a washed up Santi or a box to box player in his place because they were looking for someone to hang after a game where the whole team stunk it up. Özil was the least of our problems prior to the United game.
