We can't answer that. Goalimpact just measures how good a team plays with the player on the field. It can't tell why a player is adding to the team success., because it does not even look on what he is doing. It just relates the team success to the player being present on the field.

I'd say Goalimpact is the Özilometer.

The metric seems skewed to players with their peak years ahead of them. Which is awesome because we've probably got 3-5 years of peak Özil ahead of us.

Like any model, it's far from perfect, but it's also very far from rubbish. I suggest you carefully read how the alogorithm works before dumping on the poor guy's work.

What's rubbish is that analysis in the biggest sport in the world is still based overwhelmingly on the subjective observations of a few individuals. Only a matter of time before that changes though.

Stats will never replace subjective observations in football or even only get similar significance to its status in US sports. The game's expansive nature (no breaks unless for fouls etc) sees to that by itself.

Yep too fluid a game, there is constant movement everywhere there are also too many variables and intangibles.
Football is part art part craft it defies mathematical analysis, won't stop geeks who have never played it trying to understand and explain it though.

Football is a very simple game but when people try to over analysis it (possibly to set themselves up as a sort of high priest or expert) that they sound ridiculous.

No, but the elite ones are.

I agree, over analysis by arm chair pundits have made football very 'nerdy' but there's definitely a place for professional coaches to use data in improving the ability of players and the game itself.

Geeks in Denmark are top of the table by using mathematical analysis as the basis for all major decisions.

He's got a fantastic knack of changing an attack that's going no where into a chance at goal. Without him (and Cazorla), we risk going back to tippy-tappy sideways passing.

I don't understand why Countinho gets mentioned in the same breath as the rest of them. He's a good prospect but really he wouldn't get into the first 11 of any other top club.
