Ozil apologists really need to get real. This guy goes missing in way too many big games. A world class player who cannot stamp his will and influence on a big game at home, even when all others are playing like shit is just pathetic.

His performance was shambolic in general, regardless of what other players did.

He is the main man in this team and thus must receive the brunt of the criticism when things go awry, just like he receives most of the praise when he plays well.

And my point is saying things like "he wasn't the worst out there" is essentially defending him, or deflecting attention from his insipid performance.

Also, so what? Is that the metric a world class player should be judged by now? Not being among the worst out there? Shame.

Ozil was shit last night and won't play consistently well until he's surrounded by class players. So do we try to build a team around Ozil or not? Imo, it would be easier, in terms of bringing in new players, to not build the team around him.

and you build around giroud if you want to be mid table. we aren't built around him anyway so i don't see who is suggesting that as option.

You build a team around getting the best out of the players who will get you the most benefits. Anything else is just bullshitting and a waste of time. No one's going to build a team around Alexis Sanchez any more than they're going to build one around Theo Walcott.

If you build a team around a man and lose him to injury, what next? You build a team. One that can function with or without its best players. We need to get quality up across the board. I always point to Chelsea where our own fans can't decide whether Matic, Fabregas, Costa, Hazard, Ivanovic or Courtois is their best player. At Arsenal, the conversation starts with Ozil and ends with Sanchez. And for all their talents, both are still imperfect players. We need to give them support in the form of Cavanis and Pogbas.

Ozil gets a lot of deserved criticism, but I don't think we pay enough attention to the tactical and personnel bullshit he has to put up with. Playing a 4-1-5 yesterday, with flying full backs was a recipe for disaster that Ozil could do little to overcome

Ozil runs his socks off when it comes to attacking space. His ability to exploit space is what makes him such a top offensive threat.

Real talk, though. Ozil is not worth it, unless we are playing a 4-4-1-1. Maybe, we should go with Ozil behind Alexis, and have 4 proper central midfielders behind them.

Ozil wasn't bad, but he created fuck all. He was given license to play his own game and he didn't create anything. That was more alarming than anything. He really is no Fabregas or Bergkamp.

Sanchez is a good scorer and breaks up enough play that your suggestion is not the most outlandish. Get him out of AM where he often finds himself running into packs of defenders or getting his passing lanes intercepted. Let him focus on putting the goal in the net.
