I think I'm inclined to agree with daredevil, what we call a good manager at top level is down to a lot of circumstance and often we're talking about different things. You have a few like Arteta who can come in and transform a club culture, but they're rare. That was exactly what United needed post Ferguson, and they signed Moyes who had already done it at Everton, but the fans didn't like his style and the club didn't give him enough time.
Most people don't have it in them to transform or reform though, and it's not in their job description. United is a great example again because they replaced Moyes with Mourinho who was the exact opposite of what they really needed: a rock star manager, the guy capable of pulling rank on any player no matter how good he is. Some clubs will need that, but you don't hire them to fix the club, you hire them to fix the attitude of the team. That's why Real go back to Zidane every few years when they need to keep the egos in their squad in check.
You couldn't drop Arteta into that environment, Real themselves tried with Xabi Alonso and it failed. Could you drop Henry in there? Maybe.
