Went through a few pages, but couldn't see a thread on this. wondered who played, where they palyed, what they thought their strengths and weaknesses were
I play 5,6 and 7-aside, I haven't played 11 since school. I play Right back, it seems to match my skill set. I have bags of stamina, too short to play CB, and stronger than I look, so can knock attackers off a ball and love a physical challenge. Attackers hate me. I don't play dirty, but I can get my foot in and often get enough of the ball to disrupt an attackers intentions. I get comments about having a good engine, or being like a bullet when the oppositions receiving a ball.
I'm having to curb my enthusiasm to clear a ball, so times it's not necessary. It's not a bad thing, but sometime I could be making more of the opportunity than hoof it. Sometimes when I clear the ball from my half, I aim as far up field towards the goal. Sometimes this catches everyone off guard and I score from my half.
I'm also having to curb my instinct to get the foot in and simply jostle the attackers, especially when I'm the final man before the goalie, as when I fail to get enough contact he clean on goal. I am becoming more vocal, but this is another skill to work on. It seems to come naturaly to some players and not to others.
I'm not a technical player at all, but I'm working on close ball skills. I've noticed my short passing game has come on loads now, and with it my confidence to go forward.
We often play 4 teams of 6-aside, playing the other 3 times in 30 min games. Everyone wants to attack, it's rare that anyone else has my defensive instincts, unless they prefer to play in goal. When everyone goes forward, I move to a more CB position. I'm always thinking about my positioning and always looking.
This has led to me being picked early for by team the more familiar everyone becomes with me, which in turn build my confidence.
I love it, I've grown proud to call myself a RB, and territorial about my quarter of the pitch.
