Depends on how much space is between the offensive and defensive line. If Mertesacker is forcing everyone back, whilst Sanchez, Ramsey and Wilshere are simultaneously pressing like headless chickens, there will be a huge amount of ground to cover in the middle.

Indeed. Seems people nowadays think pressing is the be all and end all despite the issues you point out.

I actually think our pressing game was pretty good today, for what it's worth. Couple times almost got caught out but in general controlled their attacks well, dropped off when necessary and pressed in a fairly coordinated way.

It could have been even better if we worked in unison as Alexis often closed down their cloggers at the back but our midfielders didn't react quickly enough to block the passing angles to their midfielders.

exactly. if the high press doesn't work, then you drop back and look to hit them on the break with all the space you have now. if you're good defensively, it should open up all kinds of opportunities in attack.

Here's the latest: Espirito Santo is under a massive fraud investigation by Swiss and other authorities. If/when Espirito Santo goes under, requiring the liquidation of their assets, you have to wonder what that would mean for Carvalho. If it's true that we made a 25m euro offer, and go back in for him in Jan, the investment bank's creditors/bankruptcy trustee may be more amenable to accepting it.

I believe they sold their share of the player back to Sporting, obviously kami was able to pull a few strings and get them to sell up.
