Wenger sees potential and certain qualities in a player. Sanogo really isn't a bad signing, the problem was that he was our first option off the bench. He has qualities and we'll see him improve. You can usually see what Wenger wants to get out of a player, nothing about Debuchy stands out to me in that way. He's as good as he's gonna get and there's very little remarkable about him from a technical or potential standpoint.

Not sure he is as bad as you think, he is twice the player in attack.

As do, almost, all managers not named mourinho.
They also take players on depending on need (Andre Santos) and opportunity (Flamini).

So we would have refused to meet Sagna's wage demands only to sign an inferior player, in my opinion anyway, for £12 Million plus wages? That when our reported opening bid for Sanchez is £20 Million?

It just doesn't make sense. We may be interested in, and close to signing Debuchy but hard to imagine we will be paying anywhere close to what is being reported.

sagna did say it wasn't about the money. he might have been telling the truth and actually just wanted a change of scenery. maybe

Giroud was well worth the money we paid.

Fair point on Monreal but he was 26 when we signed him and coming from a different league. I'm sure Wenger expected him to do better.

Well, it's not necessarily a question of our specific costs over the next 3 years for Sagna vs for Debuchy. Sagna wanted money. He is making 140-150 000 pounds / week at City. Paying Sagna that amount of money would risk destroying our wage structure. Paying him an advance in lieu of that amount would encourage our other players to run out contracts and receive the advance.

So don't just look at in terms of strict $ for $ what Sagna costs versus Debuchy. There are policy concerns to consider
