No one's defending him but fair is fair. I read an in-depth article about his past a few years ago and it's obvious that he feels like he owes Spain a great deal. It became his adopted country after he moved there as a teenager. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion. He never got a break in Brazil. He was working in his uncle's shop in Sao Paolo because no domestic clubs wanted him when he got an opportunity to go to Portugal.

These things are a lot more common in southern Europe. A large chunk of the Italian and Spanish national teams have been of foreign descent at various points. Mauro Camoranesi won the World Cup with Italy but was born and raised in Argentina for instance. Marcos Senna was born in Brazil and helped Spain win the Euros. Alfredo Di Stéfano himself was born in Argentina and didn't even set foot in Spain until he was approaching his late 20s.

I couldn't care less what nation I'd play for.

I also remember reading that people in Costa's hometown were celebrating his decision, seems like there are others who don't care much for it.

Have to admit I was a fan before he moved to Chelsea. I also read some excerpts of his book and he surprisingly seems like a genuinely decent bloke off the pitch. Obviously I'll hate his fucking guts as long as he's a Chelsea player but that doesn't mean I don't understand his disgust at not getting a call up because of Fred and Jo.

Although he may never be as prolific aa we want he has shown himself to be a scorer of important goals.

I doubt they will get that as there will be an issue if Morata doesn't have a deal sorted before the trawler window closes. Madrid won't want to register him as they won be able sell for 12 months or so.

Also who negotiates his wage with Madrid as that will underwrite what his agent will ask do from any club.

I'm not sure what kind of striker you're gonna get for £40 million on today's market. Higuain will cost over £60 million if and when he moves, and there will be 3-4 clubs willing to pay it in a heartbeat. We won't be one of them.

I'd make sure to get Morata no matter what Real are asking for. This could be the lifeline we've been looking for. He's got like a decade left at top level too. We'd be mad to turn it down.

Agreed. £40m is now going rate. Just don't let them build in a £50m buyback.

Honestly if 40m is the going rate for a good but not top class striker, just give zlatan bumper wages and sign a promising striker as backup for a more reasonable fee.

His goal scoring record domestically isn't good.

But in the knock out stages of the CL it's quite good.

Parting with £40m? I'm undecided.
