Yep, expectations have never been so low and the general feeling is that this is a chance to give the next generation some experience for the next couple of international comps. Mind you, a couple of dull, conservative and poor performances and I reckon the knives will be out in force anyway.

The media will soon swing into ultra-patriotic overflow and we will start believing England can beat everyone only to have that bubble burst in the first game with the defence saving us.

Why not? Because of the heat? If you exclude the CBs then it's basically Liverpool + Rooney + Wilshere/OX/Lallana + Baines. Don't see why they couldn't implement Liverpool's tactics.

Has Flanagan actually been any good? I was under the impression from stuff that I've read from Liverpool fans that they were playing well despite their backline (Flanagan included).

No team will be able to sustain a pressing game for too long I reckon in England's group. The heat, even in the evening, and the humidity will put an end to that.
This WC will be special. Some teams will from the knock out stage potentially be subjected to massive changes in the temperature and humidity.

Hodgson sets this team up correctly, and I think England can get out of this group.

I guess a lot depends on Wilshere's fitness. I don't think Roy would take him though unless he planned on starting him, and I half suspect that Wenger may have been holding him back these past couple of weeks to allow for that. Seeing as the back four and GK pick themselves really, I would go:

---Gerrard---Wilshere---

Sterling--Rooney---Lallana

-----Sturridge----

I think Lallana would give us balance in that midfield, and I actually rate him. Retains the ball well.

I really like the options we have in those positions. Just a shame we have nothing up top. I would've also taken Barry instead of Lampard.

He's the one world class player we have, up to Roy to get the best out of him. We have no hope of doing anything otherwise.

With those players I'd be tempted to go

---Gerrard---Wilshere---

Sterling--Lallana---Sturridge

-----Rooney----

I think Rooney in the second striker role ends up in his own half too often and too far away from goal where he's most dangerous.

Lallana central would go a long way to compensate for Gerrard's and Wilshere's deficiencies defensively. Sterling and Sturridge on the flanks is mad pace and has goals in them as well. I like that line-up!
