Because he's been quality in Spain and at the quoted price it's a risk worth taking.

We need a top player up front. Giroud will be our backup striker next season. In the PL every winner has had an Aguero, van Persie, Rooney, Drogba, Henry, van Nistelrooy, etc. Vela has been good and represents "good value" but we need a Kos-Ramsey-Ozil level player who can take us up a level, not a useful squad player.

We could have done with a couple of useful squad players when we went for weeks without any pace in attack whatsoever. Although that wasn't helped by Chamberlain playing in midfield i guess. Vela would be a very good player at a cheap price and he'd more than likely play wide especially with Theo injured. He wouldn't be our only attacking signing i presume, we'll look all summer for that top striker we need.

at 4 mil we should bite their hands off getting him back. We are looking for this sort of player to come in and if we can do it on the cheap then we should have more funds for the CF, DM, RB, and GK that we need.

You think the ones who want Vela want a useful squad player instead of a world class player, or to add depth in attack? Your whole post reads as if you believe the former.

Nope he's more of a wide player than striker these days. Plays mostly on the right though.

Vela/Drmic/Rémy + an established striker? Yeah, sure.

A starting striker, and a utility front man is hardly unrealistic. In all fairness, there's no need to go overboard with the pessimism.

I think I'm more optimistic than most here tbh. I just think that we'll need a new RB, a backup GK, and a top ST. Other than that Wenger will bring in one more player at most, and I'd rather it be a winger like Griezmann or a central midfielder like Schneiderlin than a second or third choice striker.

Wenger has said several times that he has a rule of bringing in no more than 3 starting players.

RB, CM, ST as starting players + a utility front man and some random, nobody, backup goalkeeper like Mart Poom or Graham Stack.

That scenario doesn't seem unrealistic.

We'll need the keeper to be good enough to worry Szczesny at the very least. I think bringing in five players is too much for Wenger, we have three necessary purchases assuming Fabianski and Sagna leave and anything else will feel like a bonus. He'll say we were unlucky with injuries, the missing key players will be good enough, and so on. We'll see though.

We should worry about sorting out our first choice before worrying about who his backup will be, when it comes to our forward line.

When I have seen him play, and I have seen him quite a bit this season, he has either played on the right, or up front. Up front he has been used as a number 9, or in tandem with a partner.

Getting Vela back would be great business at that price, and with him in the squad there is no immediate need to rush Walcott back. He is also a player who can play together with our top, top class striker.

Honestly, I'd prefer Griezmann since he is more direct and more willing to make runs in behind the back 4. With Vela there is always a fear that he will just add to the tippy tappy if he is played wide. If we could use our 'right' to get Vela as a make weight in getting Griezmann, then that would be my preferred choice. I also think that Sociedad would rather keep Vela if it were up to them.
