I'll never understand the relationship that Martin and his readers/viewers seem to enjoy. He's obviously trolling and they let themselves be trolled. Are people really that invested in these characters and storylines?

The book fans have generally enjoyed and appreciated the character deaths I think - certainly always been talked about as an innovation as far as genre fantasy is concerned.

Mostly the book fans rail about the glacial pace at which new volumes are written and published.

TV fan culture is a bit more prone to outbursts of fury, I think. Perhaps because TV viewing is a more passive activity ... the plot twists are things "done to you" as it were.

More people watch the TV shows. People who compare it to other TV shows rather than other fantasy novels.

I do think theres diminishing returns with the deaths in GOT though. After the red wedding I didn't feel much shock for the purple wedding. I certainly expected the end of The Mountain and the Viper. They're teaching viewers not to get invested in characters. I think at this stage it'd be very hard to bring someone new in and get people to really care about them because everyone will just be waiting for their death.

The show has a tough job bringing the great scenes to life. One of the great things about the Clegane vs Oberyn fight was that at the start of the chapter you don't even know if they will fight.

Tyrion goes to his trial still weighing up what to do - he says he wants to confess - he confesses to being a dwarf - demands trial by combat - Oberyn is getting ready - the fight happens.

It all transpires so quickly, leaving you no time to think. In the show, you know before the episode starts that the two will fight and so have time to mentally prepare.

People love to overreact to these sorts of things. That being said, GoT goes against 95% of the other TV shows out there. When Ned was about to be executed I was as calm as a cucumber. It didn't even occur to me that there was remote possibility that he'd be killed. Even when it happened I didn't fully process it. Then after 30 seconds or so you're like 'OMG WTF JUST HAPPENED!'

Red wedding was similar, not so much because they killed off a main character, but the manner of it all. His pregnant wife got stabbed in the stomach ffs 😆 On top of all that they prematurely ended the plot that was every so slowly developing all season just before it got to the good part.

The last episode wasn't that shocking or surprising, just gory and a little gutting to see the guy you like being killed in that way.

I think it's all genius in a way. As shocked and annoyed people are (or pretend to be for effect), they'll still keep watching until they get some closure.

I personally find I get more attached and invested in the characters I like because I know there's a good chance they could be killed off. Makes a nice change from books/shows where deep down you know whatever shitty stuff happens, the good guy always survives and wins.

strike back and spartacus are the best action shows ive seen on tv. spartacus first 3-4 eps make it seem like a low rent 300, but it soon turns into something alot more compelling. my gf hates sword and sandal type shows, but even she got hooked to the point she was following it week by week

Wish more episodes were like this. Focused on one aspect of the story rather than scattered all over the place with 5 mins here and there. I'm assuming that's all we'll see of the wall this season.

The promo for the last episode has scenes with Ciaran hinds (Mance Ryder).

So I am sure we will have more stuff about the north of the wall in the finale.

last episode was more like a movie than a tv episode. great viewing.

Someone remind me....how were Ygritte and the others able to attack without climbing the wall? Had they climbed it previously unknown to the Nights Watch?

ygritte and jon made 'the climb' back in season 3. theyve been on the other side of the wall for a while waiting fo mance to make his move, i think
