When I hear junk food entertainment I think more of NCIS, CSI, Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, One Tree Hill etc. Don't think Game of Thrones is quite there.

As much as I too liked Oberyn, you didn't really sense he had a great part to play going forward anyway. Would have been more satisfying if he'd killed the Mountain and gone home though.

The same way it would have been more satisfying seeing Ned be pardoned in season 1. But that beheading led to a great storyline with Robb calling the banners and marching on Kings Landing, winning every battle but losing the war, and finally being betrayed by Walder Frey. Give them another chance and see where this one ends up.

Why would you say that? CSI is the only one of those shows I don't watch. (Stopped watching NCIS a while ago, and Gossip Girl is finished) I even watch Paradise Hotel, which must be considered the junk food of television. I guess it's easier to assume that I just look down on shows I haven't watched, though.

I'm one of those who has read all the books and for me one of the things I enjoy the most about the series is the fact that shit stuff continually happens to the 'good guys'. I just don't think it transfers particularly well into a tv series. In the books you always get a sense of the plot building (even though this isn't particularly even throughout them) and that all of the characters and events (including the deaths of significant characters) are all part of the jigsaw. The tv series struggles convey this I think. I still enjoy watching it but more from the point of getting to see some of the best bits played out on screen rather than to enjoy the story.

Exactly, and some GoT Hardcore Fans still pretend it's better than LotR e.g. which is just ridiculous.

I've made a break from reading the books, stopped with the last one last July. As soon as I've spare time again, I'll finish it because that danger of reading Spoilers somewhere gets bigger and bigger.

all i know is i was on the edge of my seat, and my pulse quickened, while the oberyn/mountain fight happened. you could probably call it cheap thrills at the expense of a good story, but i was thrilled nonetheless. i don't know of any other current show capable of doing that. maybe strike back, and spartacus when it was on.

Think I've said it before, but the TV series seems likely to be afflicted by the same problems as the books as they go on. Which I won't talk about ...

I think it's a good pulpy show and a good pulpy series of novels. If nothing else it's a towering achievement in terms of the number of characters and of settings in which the action takes place. It's a plot behemoth. George Martin is a craftsman who's been writing pop fiction for decades and it shows.

Yep, wouldn't be surprised if Season 5 contained quite some parts of the fifth book, not just the fourth.

Yep. I hope they don't preserve the "split" structure of AFfC / ADwD, because that was shit. But in keeping with the spirit of the thread, I might draw a line under book discussion here before I have to ban myself.
